. As a full-time resident of this unpretentious fishing village I am always delighted by the culinary treats on can find while enjoying an afternoon at the beach.Here are the top five beach foods not to be missed during you stay in La Manzanilla.
1. Shrimp Ceviche at Rincon. Fresh shrimp tossed with onions, cilantro, tomatoes and jalapeos all marinated in lime juice come together to create a crisp, clean flavor and no restaurant does it better then Blanca at Rincon.
2. Coconut water fresh from the coconut. Order a coco at any of the La Manzanilla beach restaurants and you will get a coconut with a small whole cut in the top and a straw. The water inside is delightfully sweet and when you are done you can have the coconut cut open and enjoy the flesh served with lime and chili.
3. Oysters on the half shell. Small, mild flavor and served with rock salt, lime and chili. Oyster vendors walk up and down the beach clanging oysters together; just raise your hand with a slight wave to catch their attention and place your order. It takes about five minutes from order to delivery of a plate full of the tasty treats.
4. Eggs Benedict. This one is a little tricky but its worth the effort. They are served at Quita Valentinas on the beach next to the lagoon, only on Sundays and they are not on the menu! Arrive before 11:00 am or you will miss out. It is all about the hollandaise and they do it right, a nice mix of creamy richness and tartness. Couple it with fresh orange juice and breakfast is a real treat.
5. Coconut balls. These are shredded coconut, mixed with honey and pan fried with butter. Not low calorie but hey, it is a vacation. Its a very friendly man who walks the beach with these in a huge plastic container, he knows Im a sucker for them and heads directly for me every time he sees me. I just cannot resist and usually devour one on the spot and save one for the walk home from the beach.
