Keratoconus is an uneven projection of the cornea

. It is basically a disease that happens due to the tapering of the cornea which causes a lot of difficulties in the eyes resulting in vision changes. The person suffering from Kerotoconus sees an irregular image which feels like looking through a rough piece of glass. Keratoconus is often found in tens with diminished eyesight. Many times keratoconus can be treated with glasses and contact lenses. It grows gradually and as a result goes unnoticed for a long period of time. Because of this progression, the vision will also not be amended with glasses if not treated on time. The disease is also hereditary.

A person suffering from Keratoconus can either have its effect on both the eyes similar or one eye being more affected that the other. Keratoconus can be diagnosed by from corneal measurements or a corneal topography maps. Keratoconus is not a common form of disease and is seen only in 1% of people. But for people, who have been suffering from Keratoconus since a long time, may also have a risk of loosing their eyesight.

There are many ways in which Keratoconus can be treated. But the treatment depends on the phase at which the disease is and the state of the patient.

Corneal Transplants- corneal transplant is the surgery that is considered when all the other treatment methods fail. Corneal transplantation stops Kerotoconus development and helps to give a clearer vision. The shape of the cornea usually does not regain its original shape.

RGP- Rigid Gas Permeable lenses (RGP) is a treatment that is used at the early stages of Keratoconus. RGP are the hard prescription lenses which are used when the soft lenses stop to cure.

INTACS- Intacs is a method of flattening the cornea to reshape it. This method involves the inclusion of two arcs like plastic segments into the middle of the cornea to flatten the cornea. By this procedure the vision of the patient can be improved. It is a 30 minutes treatment which is proven to be successful.

C3-R- Corneal collagen crosslinking with riboflavin (C3-R) is a non-surgical treatment that is proven to avoid the development of Keratoconus. The treatment that is both effective and non-surgical. A set of drops will be put in the eyes to strengthen the cornea, and UV lights are added to activate the medication during the treatment.

The combination of both C3-R and Intacs can also be used to decrease the affect of Keratoconus.
