Christmas and the holiday season are a time for being together as a family, when relatives from all over the country and abroad come together to celebrate and catch up. It's a time for wayward kids to come home from across the ocean to see parents and siblings. for many of us, it's the only time of the year that everyone is together.
But what if an important family member can't make it back home for the holidays? Sometimes it's just not possible for loved ones to travel, whether its for financial reasons, work is getting in the way or simply that they have other commitments. Even those who do plan to fly back to the US for the holidays may find their best laid plans ruined by snow and ice on the runways and inadvertently find themselves stranded overseas.
While nothing can ever replace the experience and joy of having a beloved family member at home for Christmas, thankfully there are ways to stay in touch and share season's greetings, no matter what the distance involved is. Wherever they are in the world, it's possible to speak to - and sometimes even see - the important people in your life at this special time of year.
Christmas morning phone calls are as much a part of the Christmas experience for many people as opening presents. In some households it is virtually a tradition to call distant relatives to say Merry Christmas, discuss plans for the day and find out what Santa brought for the kids, It's a great way to stay in touch but call charges can quickly build up, especially when calling distant locations like the UK, Australia and New Zealand or using a cell phone.
Thankfully, modern technology can help to keep costs down. Most Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services allow cheap calling to anywhere in the world, often for much, much less than the cost of a call to another state. There's not much to it - just set up the free software on your home computer, plug in a headset, dial the number on screen and you're good to go. If you own a smartphone there are even VoIP apps available that allow you to make cheap calls from your cell phone.
Instant messaging is another popular choice for keeping in touch with overseas relatives at Christmas. It's quick and easy and ideal if you have a large family and don't have time for lengthy calls on what can be one of the busiest social days of the year for many people. IM is far more than just text messages though; many services offer full video chat that allows you to see and hear your loved ones; it's a great way to add a more personal touch to your conversation and even to compare presents and outfits in front of the camera.
