There are a number of high altitude lakes in Tawang but not all of them are accessible. The army has a strong presence in Tawang and it restricts movements in certain areas but that is because the district shares a highly sensitive border with China. The Himalayas tower over this picturesque hills station, puncturing the impossibly blue sky with their snowy hills and peaks. Tawang district is adventure country with interesting trekking trails for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. It is a little tiring getting into Tawang but nature, displaying its splendor in all its glory, will make you realize that it is worth all the trouble getting to Tawang. Many times over!
The Monpa tribe of Tawang district is simple people who tend to their yaks and brew their own alcohol. They believe in enjoying life to the hilt and when spirits are high they often break into song and dance. Polygamy prevails in Tawang and marriage between cousins is an accepted practice. Though
they are non violent by nature and anamoly exists in that the Monpas have no qualms at animal sacrifice or animal consumption. The Monpas also have their own secret customs that they follow and not much is known about these.
Historically SpeakingTawang got its name from the Tawang Monastery. The monastery was founded in the 17th century by Merag lama Lodre Gyatso . Aninteresting legend surrounds the monastery which literally means ''chosen by horse''. It is believed that Marag Lama was looking for a place to build and establish a monastery.
One day he was praying in a cave seeking guidance and when he came out he discovered his horse was missing. on searching for it he found his horse standing on a hill top. Taking this as a sign he built the monastery in the very same spot.
ShoppingHandicrafts are what Tawang and indeed the whole of Arunachal is known for. From exquisitely designed wollen carpets to shawls that are handwoven on looms by the women of Tawang and Tibetan thankgas and wall hangings, Tawang has it all, so go on a shopping spree at the local handicrafts store.
EventsThe Tibetan Buddhist festival of Losar is celebrated in the month of February-March every year with great fanfare in the Tawang monastery.
Night OutSample the momos and thupkas at the roadside stalls. The traditional food of the Monpas may not quite suit everyone''s palate as the food is liberally spiced up with chillies and fermented cheese, so one would need to acquire a taste for it.
ActivitiesTawang is ideal for the outdoor enthusiast who loves trekking and hiking. The second highest pass in the world Se La pass lies on the way to Tawang at 14,000ft and winds its way through a high altitude lake of the clearest blue water. A profuison of Rhododendrons line both sides of the lake making a very pretty picture.

Gorsham Gompa and the Crafts Centre that produces carpets and masks with traditional Buddhist and Tibetan motifs. Tawang is synonymous with the 400-year-old Buddhist Monastery called Galden Namgyal Lhatse which was established in 1643 "" 47 by Lodre Gyaltso, popularly known as Meera Lama. The 3-storey, fortified monastery, which is second largest in Asia, is over 140 square metres and has 65 residential buildings, chortens, lanes and by-lanes. The Dukhang or main assembly hall has Buddha statues in various poses, while the Parkhang hall lodges the library, with a wealth of thangka-manuscripts and sacred books. The monastery houses an 8-meter high golden statue of Buddha. Some of the precious manuscripts have been penned in gold and are quite a treasure to behold!

Best time to VisitTawang is best visited during the period of March to October. In early March, the Monpas celebrate the Losar festival. The whole town is a riot of colours and it is one of the best times to visit Tawang.

Nearby PlacesPankang Teng Tso (P.T. Tso) is 17 kms from Tawang and was formed during an earthquake. It was part of a pine forest and now the trunks of dead pine trees protrude from the deep blue waters.
