Keeping You Children Safe From Dust

Keeping You Children Safe From Dust

Dust although very small can be extremely harmful

, so when you're carrying out building work at home you should always consider the work you're doing and the health hazards that are associated with it.

Some of the most obvious ways to protect yourself against dust are face masks and ensuring you tidy as you work. But what about the people not working on the project but are still in the home, your partner or children, do they need to be protected from hazards like dust? Well the answer is definitely yes.

Asbestos dust can kill, not just children but adults as well, in fact nearly 40 people die from asbestos a week, and that's just the tradesmen, there are many more people that die from asbestos every year that have never worked on a building site in their lives. If you are having work done on your home and it does involve the removal of asbestos then I would advise not only using protective screening for the building area but moving the children out whilst the work is being carried out.

For most other building work it's usually the dust mites that can cause your children to have breathing problems, rashes and sore eyes. Protecting against this is easy; you should always ensure that the area that the work is being carried out in is screened off. There are many products on the market today that can be installed quickly, do a great job and don't cost the earth. My favourite is a method using plastic sheeting and poles to hold it in place, creating a completely screened off area from floor to ceiling ensuring the best dust containment. Some of the better products on the market also have options that allow you to create an entrance in the plastic screening that allows easy access and that can be secured after access in order to protect your children and home against the dust.

As a parent protecting your children seems like the most natural thing to do, we do it every day and most of the time without even thinking about it, but sometimes we don't know about all the things that can hurt them. Dust can harm your child and protecting them from it can reduce asthma attacks and breathing problems. So reducing your children's exposure to dust from building work is just another way in which you are helping your child grow up safe and strong.
