Keeping Kids Occupied On Long Journeys

Being trapped on a long car ride with bored kids can be an unpleasant experience

. Luckily there are tons of ways to keep their restlessness at bay. Here are a few tips:

Books (written or audio):

Visit the library before you go away or see if your library loans e-books or audio books to download on your tablet or laptop. There are many sources of free e-books online.

Similarly, stock up on some podcasts. Download some kid-friendly podcasts and set your kids up with a smartphone and a pair of earbuds.

Videos:

Technology has made watching videos on roadtrips a whole lot easier. Whether its on a laptop, tablet or smartphone, YouTube can keep children amused for hours. Bring along a set of earphones (or a splitter so you can have two sets) so your child's viewing doesnt interfere with the comfort of others.

Games:

Electronic games

Handheld games are extremely popular for older kids and can keep them quiet for hours. Check iTunes for road trip games.

Observation games

Create a list of different things to spot, including animals, birds, trees, other types of cars, or any combination thereof. Draw up a list and award points to each item on the list. See who can score the most points.

Give your children a camera so they can document their journey and snap things as they pass by. Alternatively, get them to create a scrapbook or diary about the holiday including a chapter on the initial journey.

Alphabet game

A classic roadtrip game - take turns saying a word beginning with each letter of the alphabet. This can be made more challenging by playing in categories like car names, fruits & vegetables, famous people etc.

Who am I?

One player thinks of a famous person writer, singer, actor, etc. The other players have to guess who the mystery person is by asking questions that can only be answered with yes or no. The person who guesses correctly is the winner, and they get to think of the next mystery person.

Sing:

Crank up the stereo and have a family sing-along!

Make it educational:

There are a number of educational games and quizzes available that can also be fun. For example, you could play a game where children and adults have to say the name of a capital city for each letter of the alphabet.

Encourage back-seat navigation, so your kids can use and learn to read maps. Youngsters can follow the route and look out for landmarks, as well as learn about distances.

Trivia cards:

Many families have at least one trivia game lying around. To make a trivia game more adaptable to a road trip, simply use the cards that come with the game. Leave the rest at home. To play trivia in a car, just ask the questions and whoever shouts the answer first gets the point. If you choose to keep score, a notebook can be used.

Before your journey, dont forget the other ways to keep roadtrip spirits up like packing snacks and taking frequent breaks to use the washroom, eat, drink and stretch. Combine all of these tips for keeping your kids occupied and you might just have the best time ever!
