Children Cancers: The Research Driving Force Is The hope City Tower
8 June 2012 is a date which is destined for a great future in the history of the
city of Padua and in the hearth of all the families which live the difficulties of children cancer: is the day of the inauguration of the Tower of Citt della Speranza.Hope City (this is the English translation) is a centre, in Padua industrial zone, destined to become the biggest European Centre for the scientific research on children diseases, and in particular on children cancers; at the inauguration there were even the bishop of the city Antonio Mattiazzo -who, on behalf of the Church, blessed the building-, the President of the Region Zaia, the President of the Province Barbara Degani, the Mayor Zanonato and there was supposed to be also the President of the Republic, who couldnt be there because of the unexpected earthquake in Emilia-Romagna region.
We must admit that the city of Padua is really active from the scientific research point of view: the very innovative news of the Higgs boson has indeed been discovered also thanks to the help of the University of Padua and of the Infn, which projected, realized and installed the machines which registered the traces left by the boson; at the basis of the scientific research in the city there are also many companies which do research from the appliances and laboratory instruments point of view, like for example Vetrotecnica Srl, Padua historical company.
The architectonic project has been finished after four years, under the direction of the Roman architect Paolo Portoghesi, who for this building dedicated to the research on children cancers, has chosen a structure which resemble both the shape of an angel with half-opened wings and to the alternate Dna structure, expressing then a double meaning of confidence in the potentialities of the scientific research and in the human solidarity towards who is suffering.
In the skyscraper the Foundation Hope City has invested 32 millions of Euros, coming from the donations of dozens of thousands of Italian citizens, but most of all citizens of Padua, and the exceptional donation of the pediatrician Anna Maria De Claricini, who has donate to the hope city 4.5 millions of Euro, not mentioning the public and private bodies which participated to the project (The Region, the City, the Province, the Chamber of Commerce, the Industrial Zone Consortium and Cariparo Foundation). The Foundation Hope City has engaged to cover all the running costs of the institute and to invest at least 1 million of Euros per year in pediatric scientific research projects, thanks also to the contribute of private and public partner as Cassa di Risparmio di Padova e Rovigo Foundation, which donated 10 millions of Euros.
The structure, already known as the Hope tower has 10 floors, for a total surface of 17.500 square meters, at disposal of at least 350 researchers, and it will contain the research and didactic laboratories of the Pediatric Department of the University of Padua, of the Chirurgical Cancer Sciences Department of the University of Padua, of Penta Foundation and of La Nostra Famiglia IRCCS Medea. Among the scientists that will join the towers team, there is also Dr. Paolo De Coppi, top clinician at London Great Ormond Street Hospital, who will be the coordinator of the Regenerative Medicine quipe with Dr. Michele Pozzobon. Moreover two floors of the institute will be dedicated to the new base of Tre Venezie zoo prophylactic Institute, which will bring into the Tower also the contribute of Dr. Ilaria Capua, one of the best virologist in the field of the transmission of diseases from animals to humans at a global level.
