Is Alcohol Treatment Guaranteed To Work?

There can often be unrealistic expectations of treatment centres by families who have nowhere else to turn

. Although it can be effective in many cases, there is in fact only a small percentage that manage to remain sober for a year after treatment.

There are definite comparisons between alcoholism and a chronic medical condition and taking alcohol out of the body doesn't solve the problem but merely provides a platform. Counselling is a huge part of any treatment for alcoholism. Simultaneously, there needs to be a detox programme for both the mind and the body. Of course, the patient is not to be allowed any alcohol whilst being treated. The willingness of the patient to cooperate plays a huge part in the success or failure of the programme. He has to remain strong even in situations when he is exposed to the temptation of alcohol.

It is worth noting that with serious addictions, an occasional relapse is not unusual. It can be once or it can be a number of times. The aim is for an extended period of time where the addict remains completely sober. A relapse is not a big an issue as one may think as it is not uncommon and certainly do not indicate failure. The person needs to rebuild both physically and mentally and the process is not necessarily as quick as one would hope.

A relapse can even provide perspective to both the addict and the treatment centre as they can be viewed as milestones. The centre can offer that perspective to the patient to help him spot his mistake and to re-emphasise his purpose. There should be full access from a supportive family, friends and even a therapist. He can't be under the impression that he is fighting this battle alone.

Many patients have a strong purpose, stop drinking and have good intention. Whilst it is easier to handle this kind of patient, they are still capable of relapse and need to be closely monitored. The aim is not necessarily for him to remain off alcohol for the rest of his life but to consider himself to have control over it. There will be some who show no signs of recovery but the goal of treatment remains the same and that is to give back the addict his life.
