In Honor of Halloween: You Have To Show Them That You're Really Not Scared
What You Are Scared Of?
Are you scared that if you get the salary you deserve, your peers will be jealous of you? Good luck living a healthy and happy life worrying about what other people think of you, especially people who you don't know or don't even like.
Maybe your resume is "on-point". Maybe your cover letter is targeted to the "T". Perhaps you're getting invitations for interviews every week. But where are your results? Fancy resumes, cute cover letters, flattering calls for interviews. Who cares, where's the job? Where's the salary you know you should be commanding?
After ensuring all of your job search materials are effective, what else is there for you to do? Show them that you're really not scared! Don't be afraid to express your opinions, passion, or excitement for not just the jobbut for your whole career! When you leave the interview, there should be no doubt of your commitment to the industry you're in, your career path, and the actual job you're applying for. Most candidates stop at the "show passion for the job" clich. This is because it's what everyone is telling them to do. It's what everyone else is doing. You're also going to get everyone else's results; jobless! Ever heard of the definition of "Insane"? Don't be afraid to say your preferred salary with confidence when asked without adding "I mean, but I'm really flexible (aka "you can practically disregard my whole salary requirement because I have none, as you can surely tell, I'm utterly desperate.") Don't be scared to truly consider the offer instead of accepting immediately if you're not "feeling" the people or organizational culture. The whole job process isn't a one wayor even a two way street. It's an obstacle course.
Don't Be Passed Over For A More Confident Applicant
You have to show them that you're really not scared! Your fear is holding you back. Show everyone, the employers, your peers, the naysayers and even yourself. Do you believe that you're oozing fear? Despite your tailored suit and perfect hair, employers can hear it in your voice. They can even smell it over the phone. They will read it in your cover letter and your emails. When it's clear you're afraid, you may get passed over for a more confident candidate, taken advantage of or worse. When you're afraid, you will likely put yourself on sale. Be the new hype. There's no room for idleness. Being lazy isn't optional. Sure, you may have completed a lot of things, but if you haven't shown them that you're really not scared, you haven't done all you can do. Express what makes you unique without hesitation or fear. If you want to be successful, you have to stay unique. To get the job you want, the respect you deserve, at the salary that's in touch with your professional value, you'll have to fight. It's unlikely that it's going to be handed you.
Stop wasting your time being too afraid to be yourself. Stop wasting your time trying to be a carbon copy of someone else. You can never be a better version of anyone else.
