Iconic London Hotel Gets Facelift
In May, 2011, the newly-remodeled St Pancras Renaissance Hotel in London will open its doors to the public
. The hotel, which was built in 1873, was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott and was originally named the Midland Grand Hotel. The Victorian-era building has undergone a 150 million renovation that has restored its luxurious 19th century style and ambience.The re-opening of the 245-room railway hotel will coincide with the renovation of the St Pancras International Station which is now operated by Eurostar.
The former ticket office has been converted into a bar and restaurant and the old entrance hall has been turned into a celebrity chef restaurant and bar. The hotel will have spa facilities that include a swimming pool and there is a new ballroom built to accommodate 350 people. Marriott International is behind the upscale Renaissance brand, and the St Pancras Hotel is seen by the company as becoming one of its "flagship" locations. Marriott Renaissance currently operates over 140 properties worldwide.
One of London"s finest examples of Victorian Gothic architecture, the newly refurbished St Pancras has preserved original features including a "majestic" staircase with 50-foot windows and a high vaulted ceiling and 38 of the rooms will be restored Victorian suites. The rest of the 245 new rooms are part of a 120,000 square foot extension of the building. The hotel narrowly escaped destruction in the 1960s when a protest led by Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman saved the building from demolition. The hotel has been the setting for many films, including one of the Batman series.
