Hyperactive meds are a controversial issue and have generated a lot of heated debate

In this article I want to outline three factors which can help you, as a parent, to decide whether these hyperactive medications are indeed the right solution for your child's ADHD or whether you should seek an alternative.Here is the first factor to help you decide. What exactly do these hyperactive meds do? They are psychostimulants and they are amphetamine type drugs which are supposed to stimulate the brain transmitters into action so that the chemical imbalance is adjusted correctly. For example, a hyperactive child, paradoxically, will become calmer and will be able to stay on task, if inattention is a problem.
But stimulants are stimulants so heart and other organs are affected and that is why there are problems of cardiac arrest in children who may have heart problems. The question we have to ask ourselves at this point is whether this type of medication is useful or not. It will relieve symptoms but it will never get to the root of the problem.
The second factor to help us decide is whether the side effects are going to outweigh the advantages. Of course all medicines will have side effects and it is true that some children can shrug these off and get on with living with their ADHD. But there is a sizable minority who do not have that advantage. The energy they need to fight the sleep debit and the changes in appetite and the lethargy and so on, are very often exacerbating the very ADHD symptoms that they are supposed to be solving. They do not even have enough mental energy to stay focused.
So, a child may be depressed and may suffer from stunted growth or may not eat properly and that has a knock in effect on everything else including progress at school. If your child cannot cope with all the side effects of these hyperactive meds, then an alternative solution is an absolute must.
The third factor to make in a decision about hyperactive medications is about their long term efficacy. We have seen that the first element mentioned that fact that these meds cannot solve the root cause of ADHD or get anywhere near it. Dr. William Pelham from the University of Buffalo has made this very clear and stated that the effects actually wear off after about three years and there is no lasting result or effect.
The problem is that these drugs can never address the real issues of helping a child cope with learning, remembering things, organizing their simple routine and being able to socialize effectively in society. The only way that can be done is by implementing a child behavior modification plan. This is now recommended by the National Institutes of Mental Health and also the American Academy of Pediatrics.
