How to spend the perfect weekend in Paris

When it comes to an idyllic city break somewhere special, perhaps nowhere is as iconic and celebrated quite as much as France's capital city, Paris. For romantic lovers the world over, Paris has long been the ultimate couples holiday destination, where the music, fine food and good wine has inspired countless movies and love songs throughout the decades; but now it is considered a city destination with something for everyone. For a special and unforgettable weekend in Paris though, here are some of the city's must see attractions.

Arriving in the city, if you can afford the time then it is recommended you just put on some comfortable shoes and take to the streets as much as possible. The ambience and atmosphere can be an attraction in itself and, as with all cultured cities, often you can find the best surprises when you go off the beaten track a little. However, as vast as the city is, you can't help but see the city's most famous attraction the Eiffel Tower - from almost anywhere. The queues to get up the top can often be hours long, so don't waste your time unless you're particularly keen. Instead get the required snapshot and then grab a day pass for the Metro, Paris's underground subway. If it's a superb view of the city you're looking for, then instead head towards the Montmarte. At dusk this district, which is built on a slight hill, gives a superb view over the rest of the city, and of course the huge white-domed Basilica of the Sacr Cur is worth the visit alone.

For art and culture visitors to Paris really are spoiled, and no gallery or museum is quite as famous as the Louvre. The huge central landmark, which sits on the Right Bank of the Seine, houses over 30,000 objects and images; from prehistoric artefacts to, of course, Da Vinci's Mona Lisa. However don't assume a trip to the Louvre is enough to tick off' Paris's museum district, as you can also experience the likes of the Muse de l'Arme, Muse des Arts Dcoratifs and several more. Another less formal cultural institution is the street market. Perhaps nothing is quite as quintessentially Parisian as a street market and you will undoubtedly stumble upon many if you are out and about. Make the most of the opportunity to grab freshly baked baguettes and croissants, or sample some tasty regional cheeses or, for later, grab some ridiculously cheap French red wine. When it comes to restaurants, visitors to Paris are equally spoiled, as French cuisine is considered the very best in the world and as such Paris is home to no fewer than 35 Michelin-Starred restaurants. Of course, nothing beats finding a cosy, candle-lit restaurant down some side street that serves charming and rustic traditional French cuisine though, so just follow your nose.

For family holidays in France, the obvious attraction in the city has to be Disneyland Paris, but France has very efficient public transport links, so it's possible to venture out of the city and explore the country's other great attractions with remarkable ease.
