How to do Rust Treatments

Rust is a corrosive element that developed due to different factors but the major cause is moisture

. It is usually caused by the reaction of different elements with oxygen. This process is commonly known as oxidation. It is an orange color corrosive substance, which badly affects the metal. It eats up the metal surface and completely destroys it. There are treatments for rust and its elimination. But usually people take this casually and end up with irremediable damage.

Required Items

- WD-40

- Vinegar

- Large glass cooking pot or dish

- Sandpaper (100-grit and 150-grit)

Steps

Using Sandpaper

1. Take a light-medium grit sandpaper (of about 100-grit) to sand the rust off from the metal. Sand the metal surface slowly and keep checking the progress and the condition of the sandpaper. You may need to change the sandpaper. Remember you just need to sand the top surface with this kind of grit.

2. Now take 150-grit sandpaper and scrub off the rest of the rust. Make sure that you will not sand the metal surface. You just need to sand the rust off.

3. Once finished with sanding, clean the area with a rag. Take a Water Displacement 40 (WD-40) or rubbing alcohol and apply it to the affected surface of the metal. This will help prevent the rust problem in future.

Using Vinegar

1. For small rust stains or rust affected areas, take vinegar and soak a cloth in it. Use this socked cloth to scrub the area with brisk action. This will help remove the rust stains from the surface. Wipe the surface off with water. Dry the surface and apply a thin coat of WD-40 on the surface. This will not only remove the left over moisture but also provide protection in future.

2. If the object is heavily rusted, then put it in container or bucket whichever is suitable. Add vinegar to that container. Leave the object in the container for about 24 hours. The object or item should be properly dipped into the vinegar. Remove the item and wash it with water. Dry it properly before applying the coat of WD-40.

3. The 3rd method is quite not acceptable for few but it is helpful. Take a glass pot and immerse that affected item into the vinegar. Boil the vinegar for at least 2 minutes. Remove the item from the pot and wash it properly with clean water. You might feel the changed appearance of the item. It is because vinegar is acid. This method is helpful for those items, which you don't want to look pretty.

Precautions

- Whenever you clean the metal with vinegar, rinse it off properly. Vinegar is acid and if left unclean, it will start damage the surface of the metal.

- For boiling method, make sure that all the windows and vents are open for the boiling vinegar smells bad.
