The term developmental disabilities is used to describe the mental and physical problems a person has developed before the age of adulthood
. Physical disabilities can exist without the appearance of mental disabilities and vice versa although the latter is not often seen. The disabilities usually form in childhood and can last a life time. The term is used for imparities that make the person unable to function independently in the society. Learning disabilities and mobility disabilities should also exist. People that need assistance in learning simple things, in moving from one point to another and cannot care for themselves need special attention. Developmental disabilities are severe, moderate and mild according to the degree of difficulty the patient has.
Causes of developmental disabilities are known today as are the factors that may cause them. There are however, some cases that don't fall under any category and are still researched. Common causes can be seen in the pregnancy period. Brain damage or injury during pregnancy or in the early life of the infant and severe infection during pregnancy or after birth are two common causes of this situation. Premature birth can also cause certain disabilities if the organs are not adequately developed. Another thing is drug use as well as alcohol intake and smoking during pregnancy.
Other reasons can be poor health care, poor nutrition and child abuse. Traumas can certainly cause developmental disabilities and indeed are one of the greatest factors. Kericterus that is not treated can also be a cause. Kernicterus is monitored during the first days the baby is in the hospital, but after that you should be able to understand the signs. Kernicterus is the yellow color on the skin or eyes of the baby. The baby may not be able to fall asleep or wake up, might be crying without apparent reason, won't eat and sometimes stretches the head and toes backward and the body outwards. These signs should alert you to take the child immediately to the hospital.
Treatment for developmental disabilities vary according to the type of disability the person has. Most patients can benefit from speech therapy, occupational therapy and special learning programs. These programs aim to help the individual learn some valuable things according to his ability. The one thing to remember is that the sooner the person attends a learning program or goes to speech therapy, the more things he will be able to learn. Surgery is also an option for some cases that show heart defection or other health related problems that can become better with surgery.
There is also a new treatment that tries to alter the brain's functions according to the environment the person lives with the aim to make the person able to understand surroundings better and be able to adjust to the environment. If the case is severe, the individual might benefit from a loving environment that can provide shelter, health care, nutrition and activities according to his capabilities. A safe and warm environment may benefit more than anything else.
