Finding the biggest bargains at a live online auction should be a simple matter
, however it can sometimes get involved. You see, live online auctions work much the way traditional auctions work. They are based on clearing out homes or offices or on simply selling off unwanted objects from someone's personal collection so that they can raise money for other needs.However, unlike a traditional auction, the live online auction is done exclusively online. Everything else is still the same; there is still an auctioneer and there is still a catalog of sorts (usually online only), but the auction is offered entirely online meaning that your hunt for bargains may be a bit different than the way you traditionally hunt for bargains at a regular auction.
Misidentified Objects
The most common way that people have found bargains at traditional auctions is by purchasing misidentified objects. Either because the auctioneer is not expert in particular areas or because they relied on an inaccurate description from the original owner, you, with your trained eye, can spot the object that really is valuable and bid to get it, later arranging for proper authentication. This can still be done with an online auction in order to get bargains as well, however there is a catch - you are often not able to see the objects in person.
This not to say that you will never be able to see the objects for sale at an online auction in person. Often, an auction house which holds such auctions will offer the public the chance to come down to their showrooms to view the objects for sale. But unlike a traditional auction where you are more likely able to drop by in person since it is local, no such guarantee can be made regarding an online auction since they are often held hundreds or thousands of miles from your home, which is one of the things that make them so convenient.
However, fear not. There are other ways of grabbing the bargains at these kinds of auctions.
Check Pictures
Of course the first thing you should do is check pictures. As is the case when an auction house works entirely online, they will be sure to photograph any unusual markings on an object, even if they are markings the auctioneer cannot personally identify. The trouble is that sometimes it's not the markings, but the way a particular object looks that tells the story. For example, you can often tell whether a piece of wood is old or new by wear lines - an older piece of wood will have lines of wear rubbed into it from centuries of handling whereas new wood will often have a rougher feel or look like it was polished.
These things are difficult to fake in a way that would fool an experienced person, however with a photo, it's much harder to discern. Instead, rely on a different method for bargains.
Out of Place Objects
Just like at traditional auctions, auctioneers tend to try and gather together like objects in order to make the maximum number of sales by getting collectors in the room to see all the objects for sale. Thus, silver is often grouped together, jewelry is often grouped together, etc.
However, sometimes an auctioneer gets in a piece that an owner is eager to sell and for which there is no grouping. These are potential bargains at both traditional auctions and live online auctions since the collectors won't be swarming all over the auction to grab various objects.
