Have you ever considered learning how to build wooden boats

? You are in the right place! Purchasing a wooden boat can be somewhat expensive, but building one yourself can prove to be cheaper and far more rewarding!

You will have to have specific materials that are required to build a boat, so take yourself to a good material store with a little shopping list. These materials include marine-grade stock, cut nails, screws, epoxy, templates, sand paper, rigging materials and of course, everyone needs a breathing mask. Do not forget, you will not be able to build a wooden boat with your own hands! The required tools you will need to use or purchase include a: jig saw, circular saw, coping saw, orbit sander, hammer, drill with full bit set, tape measure and a simple pencil and paper.

The first step is to find out what kind of design you will be going for. There are simply hundreds of different designs available, so you will need to do a bit of simple research to find the best design for you. The bottom board is what will hit the bottom before anything else, it will also aid in supporting and backing up the ribs. You will need two pieces of cut hardwood joined with epoxy at an angle of several degrees. This should begin the shape of your wooden boat. The ribs actually give the shape of your boat. Draw the ribs on your paper. Then proceed to mark them out on your chosen wood and simply cut them out with your jigsaw!

If you design happens to have a stern board, it is now that time in the building process to cut it out and sand it down! Planking is next. Once you have attached the ribs, you can then begin. You should start to plank, drill, and glue your own boards to the boats ribs. If your design requires an exterior of fiberglass skin, you are required to implement it in this stage of the process. After, you can sand everything down! If you happen to be using straight wood, you can overlay the stock of your own choice and proceed to glue everything with marine glue or your epoxy, leaving no gaps at all.

Touch up the boat with marine glue to prevent leaks. If you use regular glue, this could only make the problem worse! You can now stain or paint your boat! Try to use oil-based, as it is very sturdy. A protective coating is also highly recommended and needed.
