How do you decorate a White Christmas Tree?

The first golden rule is to purchase some tree lights that have a clear or white cable. Your look could be completely spoilt if you try to put last year's lights on the tree if the cable is green! And don't be mean with the lights; make sure you have enough to go around; approximately 100 lights per foot. Apart from that, the same rules apply regardless of your tree colour!

Decorating any tree is about getting the balance right both with colours and variety. How you decorate your tree and what you use is down to personal choice; there are no fast rules. How much or little you add depends on individual taste. So consider your options carefully; do you want an all signing, all dancing tree, or do you want something simply stylish yet chic?

Once you have decided on a look, the colours you use should match your dcor and whatever style you are opting for, make sure you purchase different sized decorations, especially if you are going for a baubles only' theme as the different sizes will help to create a really stunningeffect and help to add some depth to the tree. How do you decorate a White Christmas Tree?

When you are choosing new decorations, you should either work with one colour and purchase different tones and finishes, or choose a minimum of three colours. If opting for more than one colour, choose the main colours of your room and if you are feeling adventurous, add another couple that tone' in with the overall look i.e. for a room that's primary colours are blue and gold, with off-white walls, I would go for blue and gold decorations (obviously) but I would also add a bronze and/or burnished orange to the mix. Or, if I was feeling really brave, I would go radical and create a truly stunning effect by keeping everything white (with maybe a tiny hint of silver or gold), paying particular attention to lots of different textures and materials to create a truly beautiful winter effect. How do you decorate a White Christmas Tree?

Again, consider the overall effect you want to achieve. If you are adding foliage, artificial flowers of feathers, then I would get them in the same colour and start by placing these first. Make a real statement by adding the artificial flower with the foliage/feather behind the effect is stunning and will help to create a real dimension to the tree. Start by placing you first one on the top left hand corner of the tree as you face it then work you way down diagonally. Next add your biggest decorations, again following the same theory of working diagonally, only this time start slightly lower on the right hand side and work your way down. Once you are happy with the balance, you can start adding your smaller decorations to the gaps. Just remember to keep stepping back to make sure you're happy with the balance of style and colours and remember if you want to add some depth to your tree, place some baubles nearer to the trunk.

If you are going to use ribbon on the tree (please no tinsel!), make sure it is wrapped around at the same angle all the way down with the same amount of space in-between each row there is no need to tuck the ribbon in, just rest it carefully on a couple of the branches. Alternatively, work the ribbon from the top to the bottom of the tree, just tucking it in slightly every couple of rows at the same level each time.

Whatever your taste, decorating a Christmas tree is personal, but do give it some time and thought. And if you're lucky enough to create that' look, then take some photos so you can recreate the same effect again next year!
