How To Select Costumes For Teenagers And Tweens

Most kids really like to wear costumes, and even adults

, too, like to get in on the action during the preparation for Halloween or for a costume party. However, those who are teenagers or preteens can be finicky, need to look "cool," and can be very picky about what they wear.

Usually, children of that age like costume parties, but the costumes they wear still need to be something friends will like and won't make fun of. This can make it a problem if you want to help your child pick out an outfit that's going to be just right.

There are some things you can do to make the process easier, though. For one, know your child well. What movies, books, games, and so on does he or she like? You can suggest something you know your child will like because it's a video game or movie he or she has watched before. Make sure you know and are "in the loop" about your child's life, and you'll have an easier time suggesting costume ideas.

Now, keep in mind that some teenagers won't be seen in certain stores, so online shopping is a good option. Make sure you check out any sites your child goes on first, so that you know it's appropriate for him or her; then just let your teen pick what he or she wants to wear. Your child may want to be a rockstar, movie star, etc. In addition, your child doesn't need to know that you've made sure the site was safe first. How To Select Costumes For Teenagers And Tweens

An important step is to be very honest about your budget for costumes. Some can be pricey and that is fine if you're in the mood to splurge. But there is nothing wrong with making a costume and teens might even find it a fun activity. It may be possible to compromise, too, and buy accessories online while using old clothing from the closet for the rest of the outfit. Accessories can go a long way in giving the right look to a fantasy character.

If teens or pre-teens feel like they'll stand out by walking into a party alone, how about suggesting a group costume? Group costumes can be the perfect solution for that shy or introverted teen. Several friends can get together and be members of a rock band, characters in the same movie or some other people who tend to hang in groups. This way, they can take part in the party, feel comfortable and relax. After all, there is no point in wearing costumes if the person feels awkward, typical for many teens.

Listen closely to your child's ideas, prodding gently if necessary, so that he or she will suggest some. Some gentle prodding may help him or her get into the spirit of the occasion, especially with Halloween. Teenagers usually love Halloween, because they can be "scary" but be entirely fake when they're doing so. Fake blood, false teeth -- you name it. These items are great and can be tops on a teen's list. Children may like to focus on accessories even more than they do on the outfit, which is cost effective to be sure, especially if they don't buy an outfit and make do with something they have.

Encourage teens to try on different personalities and roles. Since they are already transitioning to adulthood, wearing costumes to a party can be the perfect opportunity for them to let loose and have fun.

Parents will have to make sure that clothing isn't too scanty, though, and that the line between tasteful and trashy isn't crossed. If parents and teens work together to create unique costumes, it can even help them build bonds and memories they'll remember for years.
