2. SPECIALS AND DISCOUNTS - Of course you probably already know that car rental companies offer different rates during different seasons. There are also discounts for senior citizens, AAA members and other select groups. In addition to these you will usually get a better overall rate on a vehicle that you lease for the weekend or for the entire week. Per day rentals are usually the highest, so it is best to try and get the deal and plan your travel according to the times that will save you the most money.
3. SKIP THE EXTRAS - Car rental companies make good money on the extras that go along with their vehicle rentals. Items like insurance, car seats, luggage racks and GPS navigation devices are mostly profit for the rental agency and so you may be tempted by them to purchase these extras. Most people don't need the extra insurance, so check with your car insurance company in advance to find out if they will cover you for a car rental. Also, if you are traveling with children, bring along the car seat as this can save you about $10 per day off your car rental. Avoiding the extras will help save you a lot.
4. RESERVE AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE - When you are planning a trip make sure that you line up your vehicle rental as early as possible. The further in advance you book your vehicle the better price you are likely to get on the vehicle you need, plus if you need a specialized vehicle you will know that they will have it available if you book early.
