How To Reduce Stress During The Holiday Season

How To Reduce Stress During The Holiday Season

I absolutely love the holiday season. It is such a joy to lavish gifts on my family and friends, enjoy their loving company, and relive the traditions of many years past.

But the truth is, for many people--especially parents and grandparents--this can be a tremendously stressful time as they try to fulfill others' wishes, handle festive decorating, and organize parties.

But with an adequate approach and plenty of preparation, it doesn't have to be a daunting season for you and yours. You will be able to sit back, relax, and take pleasure in the season as we are all meant to.

Try to plan as far in advance as possible. To be honest, I believe you should begin making financial preparations for Christmas near the beginning of the year. Many of my associates find themselves in a tricky position because they would like to offer gifts to their loved ones, but they don't have the monetary capacity. Even if you only deposit five or ten dollars into a special holiday fund, you will still find yourself with several hundred dollars by the time Christmas creeps up on you. You should also keep your eyes peeled for good sales. Sometimes this will mean braving the crowds, but it will be well-worth it when you find the best gifts while staying within a decent budget.

Don't be afraid to ask for help. If you are hoping to put up holiday decorations, ask a friend over to assist you or get your children to pitch in. Neighbors can also been tremendously helpful if you just pipe up and ask!

Don't be afraid to make your own traditions! Some people find themselves stressing because they are afraid their Christmas dinner won't measure up to someone else's. But it doesn't have to be that way. Last year, my parents visited me and my father insisted that I make beef enchiladas!

And it definitely worked for us. Plus, there was less mess and fewer leftovers going to waste. So just do what makes the holiday meaningful for you and the rest will work out.

Along the same lines, if you are a baking wizard like my mother and I both are, you want to have every treat to have your magic touch. But if you are particularly stressed, then this is the year to let another wizard take over.

Ordering personalized, unique cakes to gift to neighbors, friends, and extended family members will help you contribute to the creation of the baked good, but you don't actually have to slave away in the kitchen. It's a win-win!

Don't forget to take time for yourself. Relax. Rejuvenate. Sometimes you need to forget the many errands that are taking up your time and just enjoy a cup of cocoa or a game night with your family. And always remember the reason for the season.
