The point guard continued to say that his team lacked energy, but the Suns were mentally tough and got the job done against the Wizards. Amare Stoudemire contributed with 17 points and 12 rebounds and Grant Hill added 13 points and 13 rebounds. Four of Phoenix's five starters had double-doubles. Suns coach Alvin Gentry told the press: "We try to make very simple plays, and then we'll take what the defense gives us. I thought we started trying to be a little bit too creative, and that's not really who we are."
Phoenix never trailed in the second half as they beat the Wizards for the sixth consecutive time. Nash proclaimed that the minute the Suns say they're a championship caliber team, there are going to be some serious problems. The guard said it's important for his team to stay humble throughout the season.
The Wizards have lost four consecutive games. Washington's Andray Blatche and Gilbert Arenas scored 20 points apiece, but Blatche ran out of gas in the fourth quarter, while Arenas finished 7-for-22 from the field and had four of the team's 17 turnovers. Caron Butler added 19 points and Randy Foye recorded 16. The Wizards' Antawn Jamison was out of the lineup due to injury and Mike Miller struggled from the field, shooting only 39 percent.
Washington coach Flip Saunders noted that his team struggled offensively, which put a lot of pressure on the defense. Blatche, the team's co-leading scorer, was resting on the bench for the final 4:34 of the game. Saunders said he was "dead tired." The coach admitted that Blatche couldn't run up and down the court in the final minutes of the game. He also recognized that the forward had four mental mistakes and he knew Blatche couldn't "play the major minutes." In the fourth quarter, Frye's 3-pointer gave Phoenix an 89-75 lead, but Washington answered with an 8-0 scoring burst which included a pair of layups by Blatche. Brendan Haywood missed the opportunity to cut the lead to four with about six minutes remaining. He failed to score two free throws.
After that, the Suns registered the next seven points, highlighted by Nash's pass that bounced between Blatche's legs and found Stoudemire for a slam dunk. Hill earned his fourth double-double of the season; he had only five in 2008-09. The last time the Wizards beat the Suns was on Dec. 22, 2006. It was interesting to note that Arenas has kept his gestures to a minimum this year, but he did have the audacity to turn his palms up and shuffle them sideways after he hit his first jump shot in the first quarter. The point guard said he "was just trying to find a rhythm to the game."
