How To Prepare For A Fishing Trip
Fishing trips can be both relaxing and exhilarating
. However, it's important to prepare for your trip, particularly since the weather can change at a moment's notice when you're on the water. If you're a first-time fisher especially, prepare for your excursion by assembling the following items.The first thing you need is your fishing license. You don't want to get in any trouble by fishing illegally, so make sure you keep that in a safe place. The next important thing is to bring adequate clothing. Dress in layers. Bring a warm jacket and/or sweatshirt, and pack a hat and some gloves just in case. You'll have a miserable time if the weather goes south and you're freezing the whole day. Make sure you have raingear too. On the flip side, bring sunscreen and polarized sunglasses (insect repellent too). The weather may be gorgeous, and those layers could very well come off. If you're planning to fly fish or really get your feet wet, so to speak, you'll also want to pack some waders. And if there's not one on the boat, a lifejacket is a good thing to bring along.
After clothing comes food: pack plenty of drinks, sandwiches, and snacks. And you'll want an extra ice chest so you can take all the fish you catch home with you. Next, bring your camera and binoculars. You'll want to document your trip and enjoy the beauties of nature. Of course, don't forget your fishing pole and tackle box. (Where you fish will dictate what kind of bait you use. Seek the advice of an experienced fisherman or recreational expert if you're unsure what to bring.)
A final item you might want to pack is a marine GPS system. These devices provide detailed maritime data--including information about sea beds--and so help fishermen and sailors navigate safely and efficiently. Some GPS systems even let you track the movements of fish and thus predict their locations the next day. If you're doing cooperative fishing (i.e. fishing with a group of people on several other boats), you can relay information among the vessels and pass along advice using the GPS. It's a useful device in many ways and one professional fishermen often don't go without.
Preparation is the key to enjoyment. If you plan well and pack well, you'll have a terrific time. Remember to bring your license, appropriate clothing and protection, lots of food, your equipment, and any helpful technology. Even if you don't catch any fish, you'll at least be comfortable!
