Even if its just a small task like watering the plants, if your kid shows that he or she is responsible enough to commit to their task, then its time to get a dog. most of the time, theyd tell you that theyll take care of it, bath it, walk it and even teach it tricks, and you dont have to worry about the dog. You can sit them down and have a conversation with them about separation. Give them a scenario that has something to do with them loosing something they like and see how they react. If they have a negative response, then give it some more time for them to learn to cope or explain to them why its important to move on.
