How To Know If Your Kids Are Ready For A Dog

How To Know If Your Kids Are Ready For A Dog

One of the most common things kids would ask their parents is if they can have a dog

. if you grew up in a household that had a pet dog, then you wont have any second thoughts in getting one. But if youre still a little hesitant because you feel like your kids are too young to have one, then here are some a few helpful hints to help know figure out if theyre ready to have a pet dog.

If they step up to little responsibilities

Even if its just a small task like watering the plants, if your kid shows that he or she is responsible enough to commit to their task, then its time to get a dog. most of the time, theyd tell you that theyll take care of it, bath it, walk it and even teach it tricks, and you dont have to worry about the dog. Some parents would give their kids a pet dog so that theyll learn responsibility. However, there are times that this back fires and the child would forget about their tasks. You have to observe them first if they really will stay committed to their task.

If they get along with other dogs

Take your kids out to the park or the kennel and check how they are around dogs. If theyre too aggressive and tend to play too rough with them, you can still teach them the right way on how to approach and handle a dog. You want them to be gentle to the dog, no matter how big or small it is. You just might end up regretting bringing a dog home because your kids got themselves or the dog hurt. Try visiting the animal hospital as well to check how they are around dogs that have mobility problems like DM in dogs or are sick.

If they handle separation well

You have to know how your kids handle separation well. If they do loose the dog, maybe from an accident, old age or even genetic illnesses like DM in dogs, most kids find it as a traumatizing experience. You can sit them down and have a conversation with them about separation. Give them a scenario that has something to do with them loosing something they like and see how they react. If they have a negative response, then give it some more time for them to learn to cope or explain to them why its important to move on.
