How To Increase Your Child's Self-confidence

How To Increase Your Child's Self-confidence

Confidence is a difficult concept to pin down. Confidence is knowing what you're capable of and also the value you put on yourself as a person. As a parent, one of your responsibilities is to develop your child's self confidence as this will be big factor on how he will conduct his life.

Acknowledge his accomplishments

Some theories in parenting have led parents to believe that they should praise their child at every turn. Encouraged as part of the positive parenting paradigm, it does your child more harm than good when they realise that your praise is undeserved. Rather offer encouragement and support, reserving praise for the real accomplishments.

Build on their strengthsHow To Increase Your Child's Self-confidence

Observe them, if they start swaying at the sound of music, or likes to play with the ball all day then don't discourage them, instead give them free reign to do what makes them happy to their heart's content. It's actually much better when children within the same family show different talents and are recognized for it. Make it a point to encourage your children's individual differences, let them excel at their own field, making them fit the same mold will only repress their talents.

Help Them Cope With their Limitations

You shouldn't push them into doing something they hate, but helping your child improve the areas they are not so strong in can help them gain the confidence to try new and difficult tasks more willingly. No matter what you do, you're child won't become a diva unless she has a singing voice, and if she doesn't then that's no reason why she shouldn't sing at all; the least you can do is to teach your child how to carry a tune so she won't be screeching like frog at a friend's birthday party. Once they see that anything can be improved as long they keep practicing then they would be more forgiving of their limitations and be more open to new challenges.

Guide by example

How you behave would be the measure of your own child's behavior. When they see in your actions that you're confident in what you do and that you're always ready to face new challenges, then they too would think that they can do the same and will be more willing to learn new things.

It's okay to make mistakes

Failure affects all children the same way, they feel let down, distressed and overwhelmed. As the popular saying goes, nobody's perfect, and that includes your child so help them cope with the situation and teach them to learn from their mistakes and to not stop trying.

Confidence will help your child cope at school, in college and out in the big, bad world. As a parent, they'll remember you for all your guidance and support, but more than that they should remember you for the unconditional love you gave to them.
