, debit cards are a popular way to pay for everyday purchases, in person, on the web and over the phone. With online shopping on the rise and some merchants still printing your full account number on handwritten or imprinted receipts, taking certain debit card security measures is more important than ever. Follow these debit card safety tips to protect your identityand your wallet.Take steps to help protect your account and PIN numbers
Do not share your Personal Identification Number (PIN) with anyone. Be wary of anyone who asks for it over the phone or through emaillegitimate companies, including your bank, should never ask for this number.
Do not write your PIN on your card, or on a piece of paper stored with your card.
Do you have more than one card that requires a PIN? Use different PIN codes for each card.
Don't give out your debit card number over the phone unless you initiate the call and you know the company is reputable.
Never respond to emails that request you provide your debit card info via email -- and don't ever respond to emails that ask you to go to a website to verify personal and debit card information. These are called 'phishing' scams.
Shield the keypad when entering your PIN in public places like ATMs, gas pumps and store checkouts. Also check for devices that retrieve your account information, such as skimmers, which are placed on top of card readers by thieves.
Some merchants still print your full debit card number on your receipts. Be sure to check your receipts and cross out all but the last four digits of your account number or shred them if you dont need them.
When shopping online, only do business on secure websites. Look for https in the websites address, as well as the lock logo.
Check your account regularly
While your bank may catch some fraudulent charges, they may not catch all. Be sure to check your bank statements regularly for signs of suspicious activity. Should you find a fraudulent charge or need to report your card lost or stolen, contact your bank immediately. You may want to consider signing up for online banking and electronic statements, so you can check for unauthorized transactions frequently. The sooner you notice and report a problem, the better.
