How Inventory Scanners Can Save You Money

Business owners are always looking for ways to improve productivity

. After all, increase your efficiency and you will be improving your profit margins. Retail businesses are traditionally quite labor intensive and managing inventory has always been the bane of every retailer's life. No matter how efficient your systems, stock taking and trying to keep on top of ordering the right products is no easy task. Fortunately, this has been made much easier in recent decades with the invention of barcodes and inventory scanners.

How Barcodes and Inventory Scanners Work?

An inventory scanner is a device that is able to read and decode the information contained in a barcode when it scans it. Scanners come in a variety of forms. They can be cordless hand-held devices. They can be stationary laser devices that are connected to a register or point-of-sale device. They can also be a hand-held device that is linked to a point-of-sale device by a coiled cable. While there are many different makes and models of inventory scanners, they all work on the same general principal. Barcodes are a series of bars and spaces that have a unique symbology. This symbology contains information on the price and product details. When the barcode is scanned by the reader, this information is decoded and then sent to a computer interface where there information can be read in plain terms.

Just How Efficient Are Inventory Scanners?

Many people will argue that their staff and employees are very efficient at capturing the same information. In a matter of seconds, a product's price and details can be put into the system. While that may seem impressive, it still pales when compared to the efficiency of inventory scanners. Studies produced some interesting results in favor of the inventory scanners. Comparisons were made on the time taken for someone to manually record a transaction and for someone to manually type in the price of an item, and these were then compared to the time taken to scan a product with an inventory scanner. The time taken to write or type in the details was quite similar, both taking between six and seven seconds. Inventory scanners, however, managed to complete the task in just 0.1 seconds. This study shows just how efficient inventory scanners really are.

Time Is Not the Only Efficiency Consideration

While a reduction in the time that it takes to input data is certainly important, it is not the only factor that costs businesses money. Think of the errors made when manually writing up or typing in transaction information. Even with the most well-trained and efficient employees, they are bound to make mistakes from time to time. The same study showed the accuracy of inventory scanners compared to manual transactions. The inventory scanner made only one error in 3,000,000 transactions. Manual capturing showed an error rate of one in every 300 transactions. This is quite a significant difference and shows how inventory scanners can certainly help businesses to operate more efficiently.

Employees and Working with Inventory Scanners

It takes time and money to train staff members and to find suitable people in the first place. Inventory scanners help you with your staffing issues in several ways. As already mentioned, they reduce the potential for errors when staff members record transactions. They also improve the speed with which transactions can be processed. This affects your employees in two ways. First, as their jobs are made much easier, employees are happier. They can feel as though they are doing a good job at work without having to put in excessive effort. This gives them a sense of accomplishment. The second way in that it benefits your company and impacts your employees is that you do not need to employ highly skilled people. As long as they have the basics of being able to read, write and count, they will be able to operate the system. All they really have to do is push a button or swipe a product past the laser to read the barcode. It means that you will not have to spend as much time and money hiring and training up potential employees. The system is fairly basic to use and can be learned by people with even only a basic level of understanding.
