How Does Antiperspirant Cause Breast Cancer ?

The media and online are full of stories or rumor that there is a link between Antiperspirants and breast cancer. This has led to great concern to persons that use antiperspirant products. It has been well investigated by scientists around the world and greater number of them concluded that there is no risk factor in the use of Antiperspirants.

Risk factors are things that are known to increase or decrease the chances of one getting the disease. The chances of one getting the disease does not depend on one having one or more risk factors but that the chances of one developing the disease is greater or smaller. Antiperspirants and Deodorants contains different chemical formulations. While Antiperspirants work by reducing the production of sweat underarm, Deodorants only mask body odor. Antiperspirants contain aluminum- based chemical compounds and Deodorants has parabens. The absorption of this products or substances through the skin or through shaving nicks may result to breast cancer according to reports.

The American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute undertook a research in attempt to stop the challenge of breast cancer presented their reports .

According to the National Cancer Institute ( NCI), aluminum- based compounds that are present in antiperspirants temporarily blocks the sweat ducts from allowing the flow of sweat to the skin surface . Research has shown that when it is applied regularly and it is left on the skin near the the breast overtime the estrogen would be absorbed into the skin and because estrogen has the ability to cause breast cancer by promoting the growth of breast cancer cells some scientists claimed that Antiperspirants may contribute to the occurrence of breast cancer.

Further research that was made on parabens, preservatives that is found in Antiperspirants and Deodorants, suggests that it performs the same activity of estrogen in the body cells . The claim that parabens build up in breast tissue was supported by study published in 2004 in the Journal of applied Technology which found parabens in 18 of 20 tissues from human breast tumors. It was concluded that according to these findings parabens in Antiperspirants and Deodorants when absorbed into the skin would increase the risk of breast cancer. However , some experts have raised observation concerning this study. They stated that the study is limited and not broad enough and that it was very small, it did not look at the levels of parabens in the breast tissue of those without breast cancer nor did it established the fact that parabens that was found in the breast tissue were the actual result of the use of Antiperspirant or Deodorants and whether that they were actually absorbed . Therefore, there is no indication that parabens can increase the risk of breast cancer or most likely cause breast cancer. According to FDA most major brands of Antiperspirants and Deodorants in the US do not contain parabens.

NCI and America Cancer Society (ACS) after much research and study concluded that "There is no strong studies in the medical literature linking breast cancer risk and the use of Antiperspirants and very little scientific evidence to support this claim". When a careful study was conducted that was published in 2002 where 813 women with breast cancer and 793 women without the disease was critically compared it was discovered that there was no link between breast cancer risk and Antiperspirants or Deodorants use, or underarm shaving.

The ACS stated that aluminum compounds, according to some research could be absorbed by the skin thereby causing changes in estrogen receptors of breast cancer. Nevertheless, there was no clear link to breast cancer.

The question that needs to be answered is "will it be safe or okay to use Antiperspirants?" The fact is one cannot just take a firm position because Scientists are still battling to get a clear understanding of the causes of breast cancer based on the myriad of genetic and physiologic changes. Though recent findings has stipulated that it is safe, one may not entirely rely on that conclusion as future research may lead to contrary views.

It should be noted that though current Scientific research has indicated that Antiperspirants and Deodorants may not increase risk of breast cancer, women attending a mammography screening appointment should beware that Antiperspirants or talcum powder containing aluminum might show up on a mammogram and give an inaccurate reading. It is required that those that have such appointment should stay off these products.
