How Dentures Can Replace Your Lost Teeth

If you ever find yourself in a situation where you need to replace multiple teeth

, you may want to have a conversation with your Ft. Lauderdale dentist about getting fitted for dentures. Today's dentures are more comfortable and functional than in the past. With a very similar appearance to your natural teeth, dentures can restore your complete smile. Talk to your dentist today to learn more or to schedule an appointment to get fitted for dentures.

What Are Your Options?

Depending on your specific needs and situation, you may want to receive either complete or partial dentures. Complete dentures are used to replace all of your teeth, while partial dentures fill in the spaces that are caused by lost teeth to improve your appearance and prevent your teeth from moving. Candidates for complete dentures have lost all or almost all of their teeth. Complete dentures fall into two categories: conventional or immediate. Immediate dentures are installed directly following the removal of your remaining teeth. This allows you to not have to go any length of time without teeth. However, it is possible for your bones and teeth to move in the six months following the removal of your remaining teeth so your dentures may have to be refitted. Conventional dentures are created after your teeth are removed.

Overdentures are removable dentures that will fit over a small number of your remaining natural teeth or dental implants. To support the denture, your natural teeth will need to be prepared before the procedure. In addition, partial dentures can provide you a solution when you only have a few teeth missing. Removable partial dentures usually consist of replacement teeth that are attached to plastic bases that are connected to metal framework.

Getting Used To Dentures

When you first get fitted for dentures, they will probably feel slightly awkward in your mouth for a few weeks. However, you will start to get used to them very soon after they are put in and eventually they will feel totally natural to you. Putting your dentures in and taking them out will take some practice, but eventually it will become very easy. Never force your partial denture into place by biting down, as this can break or bend part of your denture.

If your denture puts too much pressure on a certain area of your mouth, it will start to become sore. If this happens, your dentist will be able to make adjustments to your dentures to make them more comfortable.

When you first get dentures installed, start by eating soft foods and gradually build up to your normal eating patterns. Continue to take care of your oral health by brushing your gums and tongue with a soft-bristled toothbrush every morning.
