Houses Of Parliament: Where Law Takes A Stand Amongst History

Overlooking the mighty Thames River, the Houses of Parliament stand tall

. Found on the northern banks of the river, this structure that lines the London skyline is a sight that is famed the world over. Being the seat of the two Houses of the British Parliament, that is the House of Commons and the House of Lords, it is also known as Palace of Westminster or Westminster Palace.

Nestled in the heart of the capital, within the borough of Westminster, the Houses of Parliament are found close to the historic Westminster Abbey as well as the political hub of Whitehall and Downing Street. It is also referred to by two other names, that is, the New Palace and the Old Palace. The Old Palace is what remains from the original structure, when a fire occurred in 1834. The Jewel Tower, St. Stephenss crypt and cloister, and Westminster Hall were its only survivors.

The New Palace refers to the structure which was built to replace that which was destroyed, after a competition was held for its design. The new building was completed in 1870 and still stands strong today, through many wars in the 19th century. At its completion, it was home to a Clock Tower, Victoria Tower, Commons Chamber, Lords Chamber, Westminster Hall and the Central Lobby of the Palace.

The Clock Tower is the famous Big Ben of London that stands proudly giving the time for all of London. Nicknamed after the largest bell in the tower, it was originally known as St. Stephens Tower. The other attractions of Westminster Palace are the Commons Chamber and Lords Chamber, where the House of Commons and the House of Lords convene respectively. Though the building was damaged during World War II, it was restored to its former glory, and at present the House of Commons is home to green benches while the House of Lords to red ones. One of the most important towers apart from Big Ben and found opposite it is the Victoria Tower. Home to records of the Houses of Parliament since 1497, this 98 metre tall tower was built in the year 1860. Another important part of the House of Westminster is Westminster Hall, the oldest section of the building. Constructed in the 1400s, and with much restoration in later centuries, it is also one of Englands largest unsupported halls from medieval times.
