Temple Of Great Compassion, A Zen Masterpiece

Tianjin is a major city in the Peoples Republic of China

. It has experienced an eventful and turbulent history, with many foreign occupations and a multitude of military incidents. By the turn of the 19th century many western nations had established their presence in Tianjin, establishing their individual self-contained enclaves with their own administration. Each of these nations left their mark on the city in the form of churches and villas, giving Tianjin a rich architectural heritage. Tianjin also has many attractions of local origin, and the city has become a popular destination for tourists.

The Temple of Great Compassion is a notable attraction in Tianjin. A Zen Buddhist temple originally constructed in the early Qing Dynasty, it was refurbished during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor in the Qing Dynasty. This early construction, consisting of three great halls including the Abbot Hall and the Cultural Relic Hall, now makes up the old monastery of the temple.

The new monastery is a more recent addition, consisting of the entrance gate, Main Shrine Hall, Tianwang Hall, Xuanzangs Memorial Hall and Dabei Hall. The Main Shrine Hall, also called Daxiong Temple, is the principal building of the temple. In the centre sits a statue of Sakyamuni (Buddha) with his retinue on either side. The six ton, 7 meter high statue rests on a lotus throne with 9,999 miniature Buddhas carved on it. The Great Compassion Hall contains a 3.6 meter mud statue of Thousand-hand Kwan-yin.

The monastery formerly gained fame as the resting place of relics of Xuanzang, a monk of the Tang Dynasty. However the relics were presented to India in 1956, where they now rest in the Patna museum. Since the removal of the relics from the temple, the monastery uses the image of Xuanzang during worship of the Buddha. Temple Of Great Compassion, A Zen Masterpiece
