As many toys for kids have now become generally more technical and gadget orientated, the safety experts are warning parents to be aware of the new dangers posed by these techno wonders.
They point to the fact that small magnets, high voltage batteries and laser, light units can be as equally dangerous as the sharp edges and lose parts on the more traditional kid's toys. Parents are now been warned to be especially vigilant.
In the US, over 230,000 injuries were caused by toys and resulted in a hospital visit for treatment in 2008. Nineteen fatalities were recorded as the result of an accident involving a kid's toy.
Choking has been one of the main causes of death in children and this has required many toys for kids being suitably labelled with a warning of potential danger. However in recent years, many fatal accidents have been caused with riding toys - tricycles for example - and motorised riding toys have also been the cause of death and serious accident. In fact, riding toys for kids have been the cause of most accidents.
The professionals, in the light of these injury figures, still advise that parental supervision is still necessary when their youngsters are at play. The younger the child then the greater the care that should be taken and some supervision is considered essential.
Many modern toys for kids can often contain one or more powerful magnets and if swallowed then they can adhere together and cause intestinal blockage. Also, the small batteries included in many kids' toys can easily lodge in the oesophagus if swallowed and cause severe burns to delicate, internal tissue. The medical experts now realise that in such a case the offending battery must be removed within two hours or the consequences can be fatal.
The popular laser guns and other forms of pointers can also prove dangerous. If pointed directly in the eye, permanent damage can be caused. And even video games, can cause eye strain if over used. Always have your children take a visual break whilst playing with their favourite video games.
So the general advice to parents is to inspect any new toy and be aware of any potential hazard. With very young children, supervision is always recommended during play time.
Most toys for kids are manufactured safely and to a high standard but some may cause problems so be on your guard.
