Hosting Your Child's First Slumber Party

Slumber parties are always anticipated by children

. For some reason, the idea of sleeping on the floor, in a zippered blanket is the highlight of the early tween years. It may even be a rite of passage for some. Most parents realize, somewhere around two in the morning, that a slumber party has very little to do with sleep.

Preparation

A sleepover is probably the first gathering that a child can help plan. Let them. They'll know what activities their friends will enjoy. That's not to say that you should relinquish control. No parent should EVER do that.

You will want an assortment of DVD's. Go to the video store if you don't already have the requested titles. Make sure all of them are VERY child friendly. Even if you allow slightly risque or suggestive titles in your home, the friend's parents may not be so open-minded. Don't feel insulted if the children don't sit and watch the films.

If you are a gaming family, you may consider mixing game titles with the films. Most boys and girls have fun with this. Don't try to decide everything on your own though. Allow the party-girl or boy to be heavily involved in the planning stage. If they seem uninterested, make sure they actually want to have the party.

Keep a constant flow of food and drink handy. While the rest of the world is asleep, the kids will probably be up wanting junk food. Slumber parties are good places to consume insane amounts of junk. Keep all snacks accessible. Try slipping some veggies on a tray, as well. Serve them with a dip and see if anyone bites.

Keep in Mind:

Talk to the parents first. Make sure that you are aware of any food allergies or other sensitivities. Ask for a number that you can contact them at in the case of an emergency. You may not know all of the child's history, even if you know the child. Hide any dangerous items and lock up the wine cabinet.

It may seem like just a few friends spending the night, but it takes planning. It's the party of your child, but it should still be very organized.
