Staying In A Holiday Cottage On The Isle Of Skye

Recently voted the 4th best island in the world, the Isle of Skye is the innermost and largest of the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. It has a popular of just over 9,000 and is well known for its whiskey distilling while also being a very popular destination for walking, cycling, sightseeing, and much more. The wildlife on and around Skye is unique and people travel from all over the world to enjoy a rich and colourful heritage and history.

Settlements

Portree is the largest settlement of the island and is located on the north of the island while Broadford is found on the east and Dunvegan the North West. When staying in a holiday cottage on the Island of Skye it is important to ensure that you have everything you need because if the weather turns, which it can and does, then accessing supermarkets may not be an easy thing.

Outdoor Entertainment

Walking, cycling, and wildlife spotting are extremely popular pastimes on Skye, but so too are drinking whiskey, singing and listening to traditional folk music, and enjoying the archaeological sites and locations steeped in history. The history of the island dates back to the 7th millennia BC and there is still a Mesolithic hunter-gatherer site at An Corran in Staffin. There are also numerous archaeological sites from the Neolithic period onwards and these are dotted all over the island but primarily to the south of Cuillin.

History And Historical Sites

A stay in a holiday cottage on the Island of Skye should include a visit to some of the ancient forts, castles, and historic buildings that dot the island. Again these are historically fascinating as well as aesthetically beautiful. Dun Ringill is an Iron Age hillside fort and is believed to have become the seat of Clan MacKinnon.

A Holiday Cottage On The Isle Of Skye

The Island of Skye has one of the largest concentrations of Gaelic speaking residents although the number has declined over recent years. However, the language barrier is not an issue for visitors as they are treated to hospitality from the locals and other trippers to the region. A holiday cottage on the Isle of Skye offers a truly unique and unforgettable holiday experience.
