. every December. It will feature the No. 2 Pac-10 team and the No. 3 Big 12 team, so you can bet that the competition will be fierce. If you get Holiday Bowl tickets online, while you're in San Diego you might want to check out the famed Weiner Nationals, the main event in dachshund dog racing. But you might be asking yourself, which teams are likely to come to the Holiday Bowl? Well, here are a few of the likely participants.Stanford - We're trying to determine who will finish the season in the No. 2 spot in the Pac-10, and Stanford makes a good case. Currently Stanford is 7-4, and although they were on a nice hot streak coming into their matchup with Cal (the Big Game), they took a 28-34 beating to their biggest rivals and fell drastically in the polls.
They also fell to third place in the Pac-10 standings with a 6-3 conference record. If Stanford can beat Notre Dame at home on Thanksgiving Day, they might just seal up their place in the Holiday Bowl. Oregon and Oregon State, the two teams atop the Stanford Cardinals in the Pac-10 standings, will play each other in the final game of the season, so if Oregon State loses that game, Stanford would be in a tie for second place in the Pac-10.
Nebraska - The Huskers are playing like a Holiday Bowl-bound team right now. In the latest (Nov. 22, 2009) AP Poll rankings, Nebraska finished second in the "Others Receiving Votes" column, right behind Stanford. Nebraska has beaten four consecutive Big 12 teams down the stretch and faces a reeling Colorado team on Nov. 27. Nebraska might face Texas in the Big 12 Championship Game, but even if they lose that contest they'll be in a good position to make the Holiday Bowl.
Oklahoma State - If Oklahoma State University can beat Oklahoma in the last game of the season, that would put the Cowboys at 7-1 in the Big 12 Conference and a very respectable 10-2 overall. However, they still won't play for the Big 12 Title Game because Texas will win the South Division. Assuming Texas and Nebraska finish 1-2 in the standings, Oklahoma State might swoop in and get the nod as the Big 12 participant in the Holiday Bowl. Of course, there are plenty of college football experts who are picking the Cowboys to play in the Cotton Bowl as the Big 12 No. 2 school.
Other Possibilities - If Texas somehow doesn't get into the National Title Game, everything in the Big 12 will be thrown off slightly, giving lower teams like Texas Tech a chance to play in the Holiday Bowl. USC, Oregon State and Cal all appear close to the No. 2 position in the Pac-10 standings. No matter who gets into the Holiday Bowl, it's sure to be an incredible experience for fans who make the trip down to San Diego.
