Ranikhet is a hill station and cantonment town in Almora district in Uttarakhand. It is located at an altitude of 1869 meters above sea level and within sight of the western peaks of the Himalayas. It consists lush greenery and reserve forests with varieties of flora like Pine, Oak and Deodar trees etc. Its wildlife includes leopard, Leopard cat, mountain goat, barking deer, Indian hare and wild bear etc. It is a non-touristy peaceful place that is full natural treasures. In case you are interested to view nature and its elements in full harmony then Ranikhet might be a best bet for you.

Ranikhet, literally means Queen's meadow that got its name from a local legend, which states that Raja Sudhardev won the heart of queen, Rani Padmini, who subsequently chose this place for her residence thus named Ranikhet. Although there is no palace exists in Ranikhet presently. In 1869 the British established the headquarters of the Kumaon Regiment here and used the station as a retreat from the heat of the scorching summer of plains.

Chaubatia:The world-renowned apple Orchards, Chaubatia Orchards is located very close to Ranikhet and is very famous for their extensive orchards of tasty apples, peaches, plums and apricots. It is popularly known as orchard country for its fruits and government gardens. This place is rich in vegetation and naturally very rich in the view of a holidaymaker. Other attractive places nearby Chaubatia are the Government Apple Garden and the Fruit Research Center. It commands a picturesque view of the Himalayas.

Jhula (Jhoola) Devi temple: It is an ancient 8th century temple located in a secluded and serene environment near Ranikhet, situated 7 kms from Ranikhet on the Ram Mandir route to Chaubatia. The main deity of this temple is Hindu Goddess Durga. The special feature of this temple is the beautiful cluster of temple bells. A temple dedicated to Lord Ram located nearby is an added attraction.

Bhaludam: It is a small lake made artificially located 3 Kms away from chaubatia garden that is a popular picnic spot. The sight of the dam is blessed with natural beauty and panoramic views of the Himalayan Mountains. The small but beautiful garden near the dam is excellent that consists the enchanting sounds of singing birds, cool breeze and snowcapped valleys etc that make the dam area a good holidaying spot for the nature loving tourists. The dam site is open for tourists throughout the year.

Kumaon Regimental Center (KRC) Museum: This museum was established by Kumaon Regiment of Indian Army in 1970. The museum showcases valuables like Rani Jhasi's silver scepters, documents and pictures related to Kargil War, a wireless field telephone used during World War II, Japanese and Chinese rifles captured in1962 war etc.

Sitlakhet:It is a prime picnic spot with full of orchards situated between Almora and Ranikhet that consists spectacular sceneries and cool breeze to make this place simply outstanding. This place is famous for Syahi Devi Temple. It is a scenic spot commanding a view of majestic Himalayas. You may even find the natural spring that is about 10 kms away.

Tarikhet: It is located 8 Kms is well known for its Gandhi Ashram to commemorate the spot named Gandhi Kuti' where Gandhiji, Father of the Nation stayed once during the freedom movement. Tarikhet was the nerve center for the freedom struggle activities related to Indian independence struggle movement. It is a charming, verdant and beautiful small village close to Ranikhet on the way to Ramnagar.

Dwarahat:It is a small town noted for its archeological and historical importance is located close to Ranikhet. It consists ancient temples named Shakti temple and Naithna Devi Temples. It is situated in the beautiful valley of Ram Ganga River. It is believed that the mythical, invaluable and rare herbs of Sanjivani with high healing and majestic powers are grown in the Shakthi temple premises. The valley of Dwarahat is picturesque that draws scores of tourists.

Kalika: It is the small town close to Ranikhet is known for its golf course and famous Kalika temple. This golf course is the major attraction in Ranikhet, which is having a natural nine hole links, and is one of the best mountain golf courses located at a highest level. It is one of the highest golf courses in Asian continent. Dense forests surround this place. An ancient kali temple in Kalika is another attraction.

Majhkhali: It is an enchanting tourist destination filled with natural beauty that is located on the Ranikhet - Almora road. The great view of inspiring majestic Sonya peaks in the Himalayan ranges is an unforgettable experience for any visitor. This place is abundantly blessed with hilly terrains, calm valleys, cool climate and captivating surroundings.

Mankameshwar Temple: The prestigious Kumaon Regiment of Indian Army established this important temple in Ranikhet. This temple is located at Pithoragarh, located close to Ranikhet town and is next to the well known Narsingh Maidan. Many devotees, specially the family members of the defense people in the Kumaon Regiment, frequently visit this temple. The place surrounding the temple is very picturesque. Nearby attractions of the temple includes Gurdwara and Shawal factories located opposite to this temple.

The Mallin Ranikhet is renowned for its tweed shawls, woolen fabrics like shirts, kurtas and jackets. In contrast to Sadar bazaar, the Mall in Ranikhet is relatively a calm shopping area. The shopping malls offer variety of items such as fabrics, cotton and woolen etc. You may get quality handmade woolen fabrics at an affordable price. At present you may even find electronic goods.

By Air: Pantnagar airport is connected to Delhi by daily flights. Delhi is the nearest International airport, which is 350 km away from Ranikhet. Pant Nagar airport is the nearest domestic terminal from Ranikhet that is located at a distance of 119 Kms. By Road:Ranikhet is well connected with Nainital (54 km), Almora (49 km) and Bareily (181 km). The distance from Delhi to Ranikhet is 350 Kms. Road trip by car from Delhi to Ranikhet takes about 9 hours.

By Train: The nearest Kathgodam Railway station is located about 80 kms away from Ranikhet. You may avail pre-paid taxi services from Kathgodam railway station to Ranikhet city center. Regular train services are available from Kathgodam to Delhi and other important cities in India.

WEATHER IN RANIKHET

The weather of Ranikhet is variable. The climate remains cold is winter and pleasant in summer. The snowfall takes place during winter, mostly in December and January. The tourist season lasts from March to October.
