Helping Kids Get On The Flossing Bandwagon

Helping Kids Get On The Flossing Bandwagon

Ugh! As if it isn't hard enough to get kids to brush often enough and well enough

, pediatric dentists want parents to teach their kids to floss regularly too? Yup! Teaching children excellent oral hygiene isn't an easy process to be sure, but it's a lesson that will pay off for a lifetime. Setting a good example and instilling in kids why flossing is so important are keys to their developing healthy dental habits: here are some tips for helping kids catch a ride on the flossing bandwagon.

Just The Facts, Mom

When it comes to explaining to your kids why flossing is so important, keep it short and sweet:

It helps get rid of germs that hide out between your teeth and that will make holes

It will help keep your breath nice

But for your information, parents, did you know that not flossing is directly linked to periodontis otherwise known as gum disease? Gum disease is no small condition: if left unchecked, it can lead to:

Heart disease

Aggravation of diabetes

Respiratory disease

Low birth weight for babies born to moms who suffer from the condition

Teach your kids to floss, and you'll be safeguarding their health and long into the future: brushing alone just won't cut it.

Teaching Your Kids to Floss

As soon as your child's teeth close into position, it's time to start with a flossing regimen. Most pediatric dentists recommend that parents help their child to floss until he has the small motor skills to do it correctly by himself (by age 8-10 or so). Fortunately, today's dental products manufacturers have put some "fun" into flossing with kid-friendly packaging and lots of yummy flavors. Let your child pick out his favorite: he'll be more likely to want to use it. Be gentle and patient during the flossing part of your child's routine: it takes awhile to learn how to do it right.

Example, Example, Example

Like everything else in life, your child looks to you to set the proper example when it comes to flossing. He simply won't do it long term if you don't. Period. End of story. So let him watch you go through your oral hygiene routine as often as possible. If you're on the bandwagon, chances are greater that he will be too: for the long term. If you're not sure how to floss your child's teeth, be sure to contact a good Utah pediatric dentist or one in the state where you live: it's worth it!
