Hearing Treatment

Tinnitus is a condition where the sufferer constantly hears certain noises that have no external cause

. Such noises can sound like chirping, buzzing, clicking, wings beating or ringing. This condition may simply be referred to as Ringing ears. There are thought to be several causes of tinnitus including sinus problems, stress, ear damage from injury, and hearing loss.

Medical science tells us that there is no tinnitus cure, but there are ways in which the sufferer can gain relief, such as listening to what is called white noise like a fan or soft music. If sinus and stress are the cause, then addressing these problems will help your quality of life, even if it doesn't cure the tinnitus.

Hyperacusis is a condition where the sufferer cannot bear normal everyday sounds and noises because they sound much too loud. While the ears would appear to be normal, the range of hearing that should be present is missing altogether. Some sounds are impossible to listen to without pain in the ears. Mostly these sounds will be high-pitched, though not necessarily loud sounds. Brakes screeching, children screaming, handclapping and dishes clattering are the kinds of sounds that become unbearable to those who suffer from hyperacusis.

In the severest cases, sufferers often withdraw from normal social and work environments due to the noises that they perceive as being impossible to stand or that actually cause them pain. Many people who have hyperacusis started off with tinnitus. Those people who have tinnitus also often have a reduced tolerance for loud noises. However it is possible to have hyperacusis without having tinnitus.

The most common causes of this condition are injury to the eardrums from loud noises such as a gunshot or airbag explosion, or head injuries such as whiplash. Treatment for this debilitating condition consists of the administration of what is called broadband pink noise through special hearing aids. Such pink noise is actually special soft music that can also be listened to from a special, purchased CD using a Walkman, but you must use open air headphones. Treatment is usually continued for 6 months.
