Head To Holt For Famous Christmas Lights!

Head To Holt For Famous Christmas Lights!

Now that the kids are back at school and the days are getting shorter

, our thoughts are already turning to Christmas. Last year, on a visit to one of the lovely North Norfolk Hotels, our trip coincided with the Holt Christmas Lights Switch-On and we had a great evening. OK, it was a bit of a bun fight, with hundreds of people heading to Holt for exactly the same thing, but it was a great night out and we really enjoyed our long weekend break Norfolk.

The lights are always switched on on the fourth Wednesday of November so the weather's usually colder by then and people are starting to get into the Christmas spirit. And with the shops staying open late and all sorts of stalls set up along the High Street, the pretty, Georgian town of Holt lends itself perfectly for this sort of event.

There are plenty of Norfolk luxury hotels in this area but you needn't splash out too much in order to enjoy yourselves - last year, we simply wandered along the streets taking in all the sights; stalls selling mulled wine and mince pies, Santa's helpers giving out chocolates to the little ones, a countdown to the fairy lights being turned on, and a number of Christmas competitions and prizes. Amazingly, for such a small town (it has a population of around 6,000), Holt's Christmas lights are considered by many to be the best in the country.

Having spent many years in London, I have to say that I still love the little Christmas trees that decorate the lampposts on the King's Road and in Knightsbridge each year, but in some ways the Holt lights are similar - lots of tiny white lights tastefully lighting up the town, rather than a clash of gaudy colours. So if you fancy a few days away before Christmas, combined with some excellent shopping, head to one of the hotels in North Norfolk and remember to visit Holt on Wednesday 24th November when the famous festive lights will be turned on.
