Grand Palace: A Dazzling Insight Into Thai Royalty

Bangkok is the capital of the vibrant tropical paradise of Thailand

. Originating as a small fishing settlement at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River it was made the capital in 1768.

During the times of the colonial empire it was a key focal point and acted as a buffer zone helping in the brokerage of power between European forces. This brought it to the attention of the international community as an influential, dynamic and independent city.

Gradually over the years Bangkok enjoyed a steady rise in development until it became a political and socio-economic hub in South East Asia. During the Asian investment boom in the mid 1990s Bangkok developed rapidly into an economic and commercial powerhouse in Asia second only to Singapore in its might.

Bangkok has a rich and diverse history which has given it many significant landmarks and cultural attractions for visitors to explore. None are more famous than the prestigious Grand Palace.Grand Palace: A Dazzling Insight Into Thai Royalty

Comprising a series of buildings with stunning design and architecture, the Grand Palace has been the official residence of the kings of Thailand since the 18th Century. Construction of the palace began in 1782 under the guidance of King Rama I who was responsible for moving the capital to Bangkok. Since then the palace has continued to expand adding new structures periodically.

The palace complex unlike prior royal buildings follows a more western influenced design. The place has an intricate detailed facade with a complex traditional roof structure decked in gold. There are many halls and museums within the palace to explore including the original antique throne of the kings which was relegated to display once a more western style throne was adopted.

The palace grounds comprise of much awe inspiring and architecturally unique structures, none of which are more famous than the dazzling Temple of the Emerald Buddha. The intricately designed building houses a painstakingly carved Buddha statue in the meditating posture. The sculpture was carved from a single block of jade and is in laid with mesmerising diamonds. It is a potent Buddhist symbol for the Thai people.

Other structures on the Grand Palace premises include a detailed reconstructed model of Angkor Wat from when Cambodia was under the control of Siam.

For visitors to Bangkok wondering about accommodation options, there are many 5 star hotels Bangkok to choose from. Shangri-La Hotel Bangkok in particular is one to look into. It is a Bangkok luxury hotel, centrally located, with a host of discerning services and amenities for the dynamic traveller, all wrapped up in warm Thai hospitality.
