It was opened in the year 1958, during a time of civil unrest and societal issues. This was also a time when many businesses were failing and having difficulty staying afloat.

This area of D.C. was known as Black Broadway because many famous performers of the decade came here during this time. It once saw the faces of Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Nat King Cole, and even Martin Luther King, Jr.

After Martin Luther King's assassination, when the city was enraged with riots and turmoil and many places of business closed or were robbed, Ben Chili Bowl stayed open. It has now welcomed many famous individuals from Bill Cosby to Barack Obama.

Another great eatery that you can visit is Busboys & Poets, located at 14th and V Streets. This restaurant is a cafe, market, and book store where people can come to eat and discuss. If you enjoy poetry, they hold open mic nights where people can share their creative ideas and written word.

The restaurant encourages you to come and discuss poetry and books over their delicious meals and coffee. If you enjoy the arts and would love to meet new people, this is the place for you.
