Genital warts and its treatments

Genital wart is a moist skin of the genitals or around the anus of both men and women. They look like small stalks, occur in clusters and can be very tiny. In men they are usually seen on the tip of the penis or around the anus, whereas in women they are found on the outside and inside of vagina, and around the anus. Genital warts can also develop in the mouth of a person who has had oral sexual contact with an infected person.

The main cause of genital warts is HPV (Human Papillomavirus). Over 100 types of HPV's have been identified. About 90% of genital warts are caused by virus ( HPV-6 and 11) and other types of HPV's are associated with cervical cancers in women.HPV-16 is responsible for about 50% of cervical cancers and types 16,18,31, and 45 together account for 80% of cancers. Sometimes in pregnant women, genital warts get larger and, make it difficult to urinate. If there are warts in the vagina, they can make the vagina less elastic and cause serious complications during delivery. Excessive consumption of tobacco and alcohol may form genital warts up to some extent. Stressful lifestyle may also lead to genital warts. Sometimes over dosage of contraceptic pills, unsafe sex, sex at an early age and sex with multiple partners may cause this disease.

Depending on factors such as the size and location of the genital warts, a doctor can offer one of the several ways to treat them. The different types of treatments of genital warts are:

Medical treatments: Under this three treatments are usually followed.sss

Cryotherapy, where liquid nitrogen is used to freeze persistent warts every 1 to 3 weeks for a short period. It may be uncomfortable for some and is not recommended for young children.

Laser treatment, where the laser physically destroys the HPV induced lesion. This treatment is very expensive and is reserved to treat more stiff warts.

Electro desiccation, where an electronic current is used to super-heat a needle which burns the wart cells. A local anesthetic is used to prevent any pain and the procedure is usually carried out at a doctor's surgery. Electrocautery is recommended only after other treatments have failed.

Medications: Several genital warts creams are also there, such as Podophyllum resin which must be applied under doctor's supervision and must be washed off after four hours. Podofilox is a well known home treatment. Besides, there is 5-Fluoroucacil, Imiquimod (Aldara) etc. It is recommended to use genital warts creams which are 100% natural, formulated with only the finest quality anti-viral essential oils extracted from plants and contains no harsh acids or chemicals.

Minor Surgeries are also done to cut the warts away under local anesthetic.

TCA (Trichloracetic Acid) applied under a doctor's observation.

Even one may go for natural treatments in order to get rid of genital warts. Peeling and halving a garlic clove and then rubbing it on the affected area twice daily may help to reduce the warts. Herbal tinctures, or suppositories which can be bought form a naturalist store is also another option.

Sometimes genital warts may disappear without treatment. In other cases, they eventually may develop a fleshy, small raised growth that looks like cauliflower. There is no way to predict whether the warts will grow or disappear. That is why the patients of genital warts are required to follow up with their doctors on a regular routine. In 2006, an HPV vaccine (Gardasil) was approved by the FDA for use in the case of genital warts. This vaccine fights against the infection with the four most common HPV types (6, 11, 16, and 18).

Because none of these treatments are 100% effective, it is important to prevent HPV to prevent genital warts. A healthy sex life and use of condoms can reduce the spread of this disease easily.
