Aftertreatment of Cataract Surgery

Aftertreatment of Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is an surgery performed to treat cataract by removing the natural lens of eyes that have been cloudy, and implanting a new one to restore the lens's transparency. Patients with cataract are usually suggested to have a surgery as soon as possible, or the metabolic changes of the crystalline lens fibers over the time would lead to the loss of transparency and even loss of vision.

Currently, the two main types of cataract surgery extraction performed by the ophthalmologists are phacoemulsification and conventional extracapsular cataract extraction. Both of them perform well in cataract treatment. During the procedure, the local anaesthesia will be used, therefore, the patient will feel no pain. And they could go home about two hours after the surgery.

However, that is not the end of the surgery. Aftertreatment should be born in mind, or complications, such as a posterior capsular opacification and retinal detachment, etc., may be developed. Within the 48 to 72 hours rightly after a cataract surgery, don't lift any heavy objects; don't bend down; don't watch TV or computer screen or read for too long time; don't rub eyes; don't swim or take showers, and one had better keep eyes away from water and soap; don't let any dust or dirt come into eyes, then you should be away from any dusty atmosphere; don't drive for at least one week.

For sensitivity to light is a common after effect for patients undergone a cataract surgery, they are advised to wear dark glasses for a week both home and outside, even when they sleep.

To take some medications is necessary. Use eye drops and ointment prescribed by the doctor to avoid eye infection. For you have to use those medications with one's hands, it is a must for him/her to wash hands before applying any medication. Alternately get surgical cotton and cut it into small square pieces. Put in the pressure cooker for ten minutes after the pressure develops. Then this cotton would be sterilized. Store it carefully and use it.

Sometimes, even when you are have done all the aftertreatments well, you may experience some complications. Don't be worry. The symptoms of watery eyes and red eyes would disappear automatically a few days later. But if you experience severe pain of the eye, a sudden blurred vision and a view of flashes of light and floating across, go for you doctor immediately.
