There are a few different types of genital herpes treatment that sufferers can choose from
, and that choice will depend on the individual, how often they are experiencing outbreaks, how severe the outbreaks are, and what type of symptoms for herpes they are displaying.
These treatments range from prescription medication, topical creams or lotions, homeopathic or natural remedies, cleaning and hygiene options and other home based treatments.
A prescription genital herpes treatment usually takes the form of antiviral medication that can be taken as a preventative measure, during an outbreak to reduce severity and speed up healing, or as a suppressive therapy (taken daily). This will depend on your individual symptoms and the advice of physician.
A topical genital herpes treatment (a cream, lotion, oil or bath supplement) can be prescription or over-the-counter medication, or a natural, herbal or homeopathic solution. These treatments are applied directly to the area of infection or soaked in a bathtub of warm water.
Homeopathic or natural treatments are usually orally taken, but there are a few variations on delivery methods, with one popular treatment being an oral spray used similarly to breath spray (it penetrates the blood vessels in the mouth to act quickly by bypassing the digestive system) and another that takes the form of an essential oil that is applied to the feet or backs of the knees. Other forms include pills and solutions to be mixed with water and drunk by the user. These genital herpes treatments have had much development in recent years and are reporting higher and higher success rates, with many sufferers preferring them over prescription treatments.
Other genital herpes treatments include home remedies such as washing with antibacterial soap both during and between outbreaks, salt water baths and sitz baths, ice therapy (applying ice directly to breakouts, or wrapping ice in a thin towel or plastic bag then applying) or essential oils such as bee honey oil, lemon oil or tea tree oil
