Holi is the festival of colors and love which is celebrated in Phalgum Purnima that usually comes up in end of February or early March
. Holi is the festival that celebrates the good and bad of anything. The festival of colors also rebuilds the relationships of the people. On this day everyone wishes each other 'Happy Holi'. The celebration of Holi starts from the eve of Holi when the people celebrates with the bonfire. There are many such legends and stories related to the celebrations. People celebrates the festival by rubbing 'Gulal' and 'Abeer' on each other's face and wishing them 'Bura na Maano Holi Hai'. Holi also gives the opportunity to bless and love near and dear ones by offering them Holi gifts.Navratri means nine nights. It is a major festival of the Hindu religion. This festival is the celebration and worship of Goddess Maa Durga. It generally comes in the months of September or October. Each day of Navratri is dedicated to Maa Durga in a different form. During Navratri, people worship Goddess Maa Durga and dance at night for nine consecutive nights. This dance of Navratri is called as Garba.
There are several legends about the origin of Rakshbandhan. According to a famous legend the history of Rakshbandhan is traced to the medieval period. Rani Karnavati, who was the widow of King of Chittor, sent the holy thread known as Rakhi to Emperor Humayun when she felt that there was no hope of defending the kingdom of Chittor from the invasion of Emperor of Gujarat, Bahadur Shah.Emperor Humayun accepted the Rakhi and started with his troops to defend her but before he reached Chittor, the war was over and kingdom was captured. Queen Karnavati committed 'Jauhar' with a large number of women.
Diwali is celebrated for five days according to Hindus and each day has its own importance. People do preparations for Diwali in advance. They do shopping, prepare sweets and different dishes to welcome the guests. Everybody cleans their homes and decorates them with Diyas (candles), electric lights and colorful rangolis for the five days. There is a significance of Laxmi - the goddess of wealth on Diwali. On Dhanteras, the first day of Diwali - it is a significance to buy gold. On the 3rd day, people do Laxmi pooja along with pooja of lord Ganesha on main Diwali day (also called as Laxmi poojan). This is to please the gods for prosperity and happiness. On this day of Diwali, all family members wake up early in the morning and worship together. The females prepare sweets for the family and brighten their house with diyas and lights to welcome the goddess Lakshmi and prosperity.
Baisakhi - Baisakhi is celebrated as the new year in North India - mainly Punjab state. It is the harvest festival which generally comes on 13th April every year. On this day, people wake up early in the morning and take a bath in the river and go to Gurudwara - the temple of Sikhs for worship and take the special prasad called Kada prasad. In many places, Fairs are organised on this day. The day is celebrated with joy and fervor.
