If you are accustomed to using older models of forklifts, you may think that cheap vinyl or cloth seats are the only types of forklift seats there are. If you have newer forklift in your workplace, you have probably seen some of the more modern ergonomically designed seats. These more user friendly seats are really catching on as replacement forklift seats now that owners and operators of lift trucks understand all of their advantages.
When you start looking into replacing your forklift seats, you'll be amazed by the wide variety of styles and price ranges you can find them in. Some cost well under $100, while others can cost as much as $800. What's the difference? How can one seat cost so much more than another?
At the lower end of the price scale, replacement forklift seats are simple padded seats and backrests and nothing more. One might feature a cloth seat covering while another may be vinyl and the only adjustment you can make is to move the seat forwards or backwards. You can buy seats like these for under a hundred bucks and it might be all you need if you only use your forklift now and then.
Up the price scale, in the $200 range, you can get these same forklift seats with arm rests. For a little more money, you can buy cloth covered seats that come with contoured seats and backrests for extra comfort. If you use your forklift regularly, you will probably want to consider buying one of these, though they might not be adequate for a full time operator.
What does "ergonomics" mean, anyway? The word comes from two Greek words that together essentially mean working ("ergon") in harmony with natural laws ("nomoi"). The idea behind it in designing forklift seats is to make a seat that is comfortable and safe to sit in for extended period of time. This is not an easy thing to accomplish, since all our bodies are shaped differently. If a replacement forklift seat is going to be truly an ergonomic seat, it has to have adjustable features.
Good ergonomics in any seat includes a lumbar support system. The best back support system will be adjustable, so that the user can adapt it to the curve of his back. It is also important that the seat can be adjusted up and down for taller and shorter operators. Another important part of a good seat is its suspension. It should be shock absorbing and also remain stable when the forklift sways. The best suspension systems can even be manually adjusted to suit the weight of the operator.
While all of this high tech science may seem to be over the top and more suited to race cars than to lift trucks, you need to stop and think for a moment about how much time a forklift operator spends in his seat. When you look at it that way, you can see that his forklift seat is very important both to him and to your business.
