Five Helpful Suggestions To Help You Get Through Christmas Day

Stressful events, like Christmas, are always a great test for relationships

.

Most often however these events seem to just bring out the worst in people as they attempt to manage all that there is to do to bring families together.

The wish is always that these times are remembered for the good things and not for the bad things that can happen. But as often as not this is not what

actually happens.

It is all too familiar a scenario that when families come together, Christmas often being the only time in the year that they do so, tensions rise and old squabbles resurface. So instead of a happy day it becomes a day filled with frustration, anger and harsh words leaving people wondering why they bothered in the first place.

Does this sound like your family?

Or is the picture more like this: Everything is great until the alcohol starts to flow and then some members of the family just become embarrassingly drunk. And the drunker they get, the louder they get and the more irritating they become.

Either way the outcome is the same: frustrated unhappy people just waiting for the opportunity to bid their farewells and get out of there.

So what can you do about this issue?

Here are five easy steps to help you deal with that Christmas madness:

Firstly - stay calm! Make sure that you are as well prepared as you can be before the day so you are not too tired on the day to enjoy it.

Secondly - stay calm! Nothing was ever resolved by everyone becoming emotional with each other.

Thirdly - stay calm! If it is needed separate yourself from the offensive person until they have settled down.

Fourthly - stay calm! You will need to make a decision about whether it is appropriate or helpful even, to confront the offending individual or to just leave it. This is especially worth considering if you're not going to see that person for another year.

And Fifthly - stay calm! Accept that not everything is going to be perfect and there will be hiccups on the day. The thing is that it is the hiccups that become the days most talked about topics. These are really what makes the day truly memorable.

Such a thing happened to one close friend of mine. Christmas day had arrived. The shopping was all done. The table was set and the gifts were wrapped and placed lovingly beneath the tree.

The guests arrived and were given something to drink and some nibblies to get started while the turkey was cooking. And then in a pause in the conversation the host realized that the turkey was still in the freezer and that was to be

the main focus of the meal.

To save the day the host quietly slipped away from the party and went to the town to find a chicken shop that was fortunately open. He bought several chickens to ensure that all would be fed, rushed them home, laid them out on a platter and served them up.

Of course questions were asked and the slip up was laughed off in good humour. The funny thing is that that story seems to come up every year, maybe even with a little extra embellishment, and is still enjoyed as one of the most memorably funny Christmases this family had had.

So are you seeing a theme here in these suggestions? The thing is that most conflicts arise because the individuals involved are stressed out to begin with. So if everyone starts off a little more calmly then just maybe so much of the strife could be avoided in the first place.

Christmas is truly a time for family - Rejoice in it and be glad you have them.
