First Aid with Kids in Mind

First Aid with Kids in Mind

Being able to appropriately maintain and use a first aid kit is an essential skill that is often overlooked by people

. Helping someone who is injured, no matter how drastically or seriously, is not just about slapping on band-aid and hoping for the best. There are simple steps that everyone should know, but not enough people know even the most basic elements of first aid skills. That's why children should be educated about how to use what's in the first aid kit that their parents have.

Parents should also be prepared to deal with any medical concerns that their children may have while outside the house. Sure, you have Benadryl and triple antibiotic ointment in your medicine cabinet, but do you have age-appropriate first aid materials for when you're out with the kids, at the store or even on vacation.

A first aid kit with kids in mind should contain:

An ample amount of antibiotic ointment and large bandages it's no fun trying to use several separate bandages to cover up a large scrape on your child's leg or arm. Always have hand wipes or some kind of hand sanitizer for both you and your children. Bringing germs back from public places is never a good idea.

Age-appropriate drugs like ibuprofen, acetaminophen and Benadryl are always a good idea to have a stock of. Make sure to have liquid versions of these drugs in case your child has trouble swallowing pills.

A nasal aspirator can be very helpful if your child is having respiratory problems.

It may seem trite, but having a high SPF sunscreen just in case of glaring sun is always good to have. On the same token, you should probably have some kind of soothing aloe lotion in case your child gets a sunburn while at the beach or on vacation.

Now obviously, children who are too young should not have access to any first aid kit materials without adult supervision. If a problem does arise and it involves a simple cut or scrape, have your child dress his/her own cut or wound. There's no such thing as too much basic medical education.
