In the last ten years there has been a significant increase in the hiring of a female bodyguard

. Much of this is attributed to the improvement of close protection training for women bodyguards seeking high paid body guard jobs.

Given the increase in bodyguard protection for war zone regions, it was only a matter of time before a war zone close protection course was designed in Cyprus for a female bodyguard tasked with protective service operations.

I have extensive experience in close protection training in over forty different countries during my 20 year plus protective service operations career. I've lost count of the number of International bodyguards I have trained to become a professional close protection officer. It is without doubt running in the tens of thousands figure.

Before I was recruited to run the ground Zero close protection special forces training facility in Alabama USA I used to maintain records of every close protection course I ran. Every 5 years I ran a strategic business review of my statistics. One of the most interesting facts was that during the first 5 year review a female bodyguard was virtually unheard of.

In fact women bodyguards made up less than one percent of my close protection officer student base. My business partners soon identified there was a niche in the protective service operations arena for women bodyguards looking to fill the available body guard jobs.

A conscious decision was made to encourage an increase in female bodyguard attendees on all of our bodyguard protection training courses. The process was slow, painfully slow, despite the existence of numerous highly paid body guard jobs.

It was clear that the historically secretive world of protective service operations was considered a male only domain. In reality nothing was further from the truth. A professionally trained female bodyguard was in high demand and often we were able to command a higher salary for women bodyguards than we were for our male bodyguards.

We also learned that we were being asked specifically for women bodyguards to fill some very high profile bodyguard protection contracts for clients like Middle Eastern Royal VIP's.

Despite this clear niche in the close protection officer industry market it was still a struggle to entice aspiring female close protection officers onto our close protection training programmes in significant numbers.

The following statement will no doubt cause concern and condemnation among male bodyguards, but it's a fact and so I have no problem documenting it. In most of our tactical bodyguard protection training programmes designed for hostile environment and war zone operations, it was always a female bodyguard who graduated top of the class.

Along with my fellow close protection instructors we monitored every close protection training programme very carefully. While the male bodyguards busied themselves trying to outdo each other in macho bulls**t, the women bodyguards just got straight on task and forgot all about trying to outdo their peers.

The end result was that all our female bodyguard students always ranked in the class top positions.

At long last the close protection training industry is beginning to shake off its cowboy image. Close protection officer licensing in the UK, and other overseas regions has partly helped.

However the British SIA licence is not required, or even valid for overseas protective service operations. This means that any bodyguards looking to gain high paid body guard jobs outside of the UK have to attend overseas bodyguard protection or close protection training programmes.

One new dynamic close protection officer training programme has been specifically designed for war zone protective service operations. It is scheduled to run during April 2010 in Cyprus. The bodyguard protection Instructors are all industry leading specialists with a minimum of 15 years close protection officer experience operating in various hostile environments.

Some of the Instructors are working full time security details in Iraq and other hostile Middle Eastern environments. This ensures the delivery of world class training for all close protection students seeking to obtain high risk-high paid body guard jobs.

The protective service operations industry is currently booming, especially given the introduction of unstable war zone regions like Iraq and Afghanistan. This means there are many new contracting body guard jobs on offer. The only problem is war zone bodyguards have to be highly trained in advanced close protection training, particularly in areas of war zone and hostile environment bodyguard protection training.

If we use the example of their only being approximately 8% of women bodyguards in today's protective service operations industry, then this opens up a very exciting opportunity for a female bodyguard looking to grab one of the highly paid body guard jobs.

For every 100 close protection officer vacancies there is only likely to be 8 female bodyguards applying for a position. If you factor in that just about every protective service operational team requires one or two women bodyguards then you'll begin to understand the opportunities.

After several years of monitoring our close protection training we were able to increase the percentage of women bodyguards entering the bodyguard protection industry up to 8%.

At one stage we even got to running fast track close protection training programmes just for women bodyguards to service the demand for female bodyguards required for Middle Eastern female members of royal families. We eventually nailed the full training programme down to just six months.

In fact one of the most successful female bodyguards I ever trained went through her entire high risk training programme in just under six months. She immediately landed the close protection team leaders position protecting a Middle Eastern princess who was travelling the world.

This female bodyguard was so professional that when she also graduated through our close protection officer Instructors programme we utilised her as the lead instructor for all our bodyguards protecting Middle Eastern VIP's.

In some countries the take up rate of female bodyguards was higher than in the UK and the USA. For example during my training programmes in Mexico and in six of the independent states of the former Soviet Union, there was always a high number of female bodyguard trainees.

I admit this flummoxed me, especially given that these regions are well known for their lack of political correctness and lack of gender equality.

A unit of Mexican special forces tasked with providing protective service operations for high net worth business executives attended several of my hostile environment close protection programmes.

The top graduate was a female protection officer. At the time Mexico was the second highest country in the world for kidnappings for ransom behind Colombia.

These bodyguards had to be trained in war zone type close protection training and they sailed through it under the guidance of a very competent female protection officer team leader.

Women bodyguards considering stepping up into war zone protective service operations in countries like Iraq and Afghanistan have to be highly trained in many of the specialist subjects not generally taught on conventional close protection training programmes.

A close protection officer who has only basic bodyguard protection skills will fail miserably in a war zone environment. This statement translates into someone like the VIP client, a close protection officer team mate or you getting killed, or seriously injured.

Hostile environment training should be undertaken as soon as you decide to make the transition up from conventional protective service operations to war zone bodyguard protection.

The female bodyguard war zone close protection course scheduled for April 2010 in Cyprus will be looking to identify women bodyguards looking to move into high risk-high paid body guard jobs for high profile clients.

The bodyguards who recognise this need for specialised training and who enrol, and graduate successfully, are what security industry specialists refer to as 'Serious Participants.'
