Fashion Trends This Autumn
Despite many of us feeling we didn't see enough of the sun this summer
, the Autumn / Winter collections are already filling up the racks.This coming season, 'quality' and 'texture' are very much the buzz words. This was very much in evidence across several collections for this season, particularly Hermes, Burberry and Chloe.
If you can't afford the real thing, seek out the higher-end High Street brands this Autumn. The emphasis is on shearling, cashmere, leather, alligator skin and suede. Fabrics are luxurious - embellished with jewels, edged with fur, or decorated with rich embroidery.
Last year's military trend is still in evidence, this time softened with pleating, full skirts and subtle lace. Curves are 'in' and either emphasised or created with extra fabric and clever tailoring. For fans of retro, feel free to re-visit the 50's with full skirts, shift dresses and kitten heels in the evening. For daytime, fast-forward to the 70's with high-waisted, straight-leg trousers and a quality shirts.
The staple item for your Winter wardrobe has to be either the camel coat or the shearling jacket. Burberry showed the rest how it was done with their cropped aviator style shearlings worn over barely-there chiffon and teamed with over-the-knee killer boots.
Knits come in every weight - and are worn in the same colour from top to toe, belted in the middle with leather. Again, the emphasis is on quality, with cashmere still a firm favourite. Knits are about effortless elegance - looking as though you pulled on what you've had in the wardrobe for years that cost an absolute fortune and still looks good.
Skirts that aren't full are worn short and wrap-around, or impossibly long! Long versions were luxuriously embellished, rouched down the front or embroidered. Short skirts were often little more than glimpses of a hemline or a couple of inches of delicate lace peeking out from under a shearling or leather jacket.
High necklines were everywhere on the catwalks this season, so although the silhouettes are sexy and womanliness very much in evidence, the trick is to do sexy with everything covered! If a high neckline is not for you, consider the option of the part opaque, part transparent top which keeps you covered without that mummifying effect.
Your skirt may be short, but this will be worn with thick opaque tights to spare your blushes and ward off hypothermia!
Logos are now pared down to the point of invisibility when it comes to handbags, so look for the subtlest, most luxurious go-with-anything briefcase style bag worn over the forearm or held in your hand.
Footwear is predominately boots as the season dictates and these tend to be one extreme or the other - long and leggy, or pared down to the shortest boot shoes possible. Shoes themselves are traditionally inspired with block heels, buckles and bows.
The colour palette will be cosy and autumnal - from gold and camel through to warmest chestnut brown. Wear with black, petrol blue, darkest navy or a touch of leopard print to a scarf or skirt to hit the nail on the head for Autumn / Winter 2010.
