They have a very foul odor and can make your breath foul smelling as well. Unless they are removed, the odor remains in your mouth offending everyone you come in close contact with.
There are times that you will simply cough these out. Do not be alarmed though as this is a normal occurrence. Your health is not in danger unless they continue to grow without being dislodged. This can cause the tonsils to become sore. Although tonsil surgery is a common occurrence in children, many doctors refrain from removing them in adults because the surgery is much more difficult on them.

There is just enough force from the baster to blast them loose where they can easily be removed and disposed of properly. Do not let the stones slip down the throat.
Some doctors recommend a gargle and mouth rinse to dislodge them. Salt water is the recommended gargle but it can leave you with foul smelling breath. If there is no irritation in the throat, other rinses and gargles can be used. This can help flush the stones out as well as refresh the breath.
A cotton swab or toothpick is very effective at removing small tonsilloliths. It is a painless process that only requires a mirror and either a cotton swab or a toothpick. They are usually very easy to see so you should be able to simply open the mouth to see them. Use the implement to move it out of place and either spit it out or remove it with the implement.
The treatment you will use to rid your tonsils of these stones will greatly depend on the size of them. If they are small, they usually do not require any treatment at all. Larger ones that are encased within the tonsils may require your physician to remove.
The next time you are looking at your throat and see a white or yellow ball of oatmeal, decide what course of action you need to take. This is normal although not everyone gets them. Effective treatment for tonsil stones does not always mean surgery. Select the treatment that is right for you.
